American blood spilled to protect the freedom and peace of people all over the world.  320,000 USA casualties in WWI, 1,076,000 USA casualties in WWII, 128,000 USA casualties in the Korean War, 211,000 casualties in the Vietnam "conflict", 57,000 USA casualties in "War on Terror".  Benghazi, Libya, 13 USA casualties. These figures don't include 70,000 MIA.  But, the leaders of one political party of the United States of America continue to make the statement..."What difference does it make?".

Ed,
I hit a dillo with my Chevy Venture a few years back. It is wheel chair equipped and very low to the ground. That darn dillo must have rolled under the van because as soon as I hit it we all smelled gasoline inside the van. I stopped and checked and sure enough I had a spray of gas coming from the fuel line under the car. They have spikes at the bottom of their shell that must have hit the line. Luckily we made it to a repair shop before running out of gas.
That's 2 less Dillo's that can cause more damage. :'(

They are definitely solid creatures...on a low-profile vehicle I would imagine they could/would do some damage...especially with todays light vehicles.

Wow, Jim, I didn't think you were so sentimental about the dillos....by the way, I got another one tonight in the front yard...about 10pm.  Body count is at three, now.  I hope those buzzards don't spread the word around about the breakfast special we have going on!!!! ;)

Here's some captures from the game camera.

Ed,
Yea, I love them alright. They like to dig their burrows right up against the foundation of my house. It was treated with cloridane and would last forever if they didn't keep digging their holes through it. :?

GRRRRR!!!!!!!  :-x  The battle continues...

After killing the first three I haven't had the pleasure of seeing another one but something interesting has happened...the holes are BIGGER.  I can't figure their timing out...I missed them last night.  I went out at 9:30pm and saw nothing...again at 11:30pm and in that two hour period they came through.  I've got my game camera set back up so maybe over the next night or two I can determine consistent time...if there is a consistent time.

Here's some shots in case someone thinks I'm just a cold-hearted person wanting to shoot something.

The hoe is for pulling the dirt back into the hole...the problem is that you never pull enough back into the hole to fill it up...

A couple of holes...

A highly targetted area that I've mostly tried to pull dirt back into the holes...

Ok I'm glad someone else mentioned the leprocy thing. I would definitely make sure to wash my hands thoroughly after handling them. This thread is hilarious by the way. My favorite memories of spending time with my grandfather were when he would let me stay up as late as I could and do armadillo patrols around his garden. This was serious business. He would put his 12 ga on the counter, I would put my pellet gun next to his and he would get out the 6 volt head lamp the we would stay up as late as we could watching looney toons (usually road runner). That was in Iowa, La.

<chuckle>  Sounds like you and your granddaddy had a good time, Jack...good memories there, cherish them!

I'm still at odds with the dillos.  I missed my first one the other night "walking patrol".  He was in the tall grass at the pasture/yard transition line...he jumped and started running way from me but about the time I pulled the trigger on him he veered off to the left side.  :hissyfit:

I've got my game camera set back up but the deer keep tripping it...which reminds me I still need to find a deep freezer before fall.  :-D

Try a red or green spot light. Coyotes dont seem to see red and pigs dont see the green.

Tom, I had been thinking about that.  I've got some red material I can use...I'll have to hunt up some green, though.  They're still working hard...  :-\

My dad while he was still with us would tell the story (possum)
this works on all the critters that want to make your home theirs

one night (when my dad was a boy on the farm) the chickens erupted into a ruckus.
his dad and the brothers went outside to see. yes the three legged dog went to (lost a hind leg to a badger many years before) there it was the dog got to it first. yes it too was now playing possum. they tried shewing it prodded it with a stick, a gun, kicked it too.just played dead while the dog sniffed it. nothing they did had any effect, moving the old possum along.
well sir grandpa wanted to go back to bed. Mother nature stirred more than he could bare.
so Grandpa wiped it out. Yep he whizzed on the possum. Bam like a bullet leaving the muzzle of the varmint gun, ole possum ran off not to be seen again.
the moral of this tail, when all else fails ya just gotta do the unthinkable.
