Whats the best Fall smell???
« on: September 08, 2013, 06:57:31 pm »
What's the best Fall smell???

No it's not the smell of food from a Fall fair or a farmers market, it's the smell of Old Gym Socks!!!!
My hives are smelly and I love it! The Goldenrod is coming in!
There is also lots of bright golden yellow pollen coming in too.
My smallest hive is busy drawing out a medium box and filling it with nectar.
Hopefully the flow will stay for a week or two more, so that they can finish off this box for winter.

Anyone else got a smelly hive with Goldenrod coming in?

The smell that cotton gives when you pack it down for transport. (days gone by)

yeah we used to play in the wagons of cotton when they were picking it every fall.  the fair usually came to town around the same time.  back then it was cold enough to need a jacket in the fall.

what exactly is that smell?  my hive just started emitting that aroma (like sweet smelling socks) a week or so ago.  Is it a sign of hope for me or just typical?

No sweet smelling socks here. The smell of old gym socks has been attributed to goldenrod and some also say aster or a combination of the two.

It's the smell of a fall flow in progress and the bees are bringing it in.
How much is still to be determined, could be lots or could be little!!
Apparently once the honey is cured by the bees the smell goes away. Some people like the taste of Goldenrod Honey some don't. You can try some and see if you like it, if not leave it on for the bees, for winter stores. This is my first year and I am wondering if I will like to taste?

I never expected honey for me anyway.  I started this hive very late and just want their stores to be adequate.  I guess things are looking a little more positive for this hive.
