Hello! New to beekeeping
« on: March 28, 2013, 04:19:18 pm »
Hi, I wanted to introduce myself. I live in Colorado and just ordered my first hive! Looking forward to it's arrival so I can get it ready for a package of Italian bees.  Looking forward to learning a lot!

Welcome to the forum and to beeking!  I'm eagerly awaiting my bees as well (week and a half) and just finished building my first hive (with some help from my dad).  This is a great place for advice and experience...and just to shoot the shite!  Enjoy and good luck. Can't wait to hear about your adventures.

Welcome to the forum, Meashton.  There are lots of videos and threads here to help.  You may also want to check out a local bee club.  Beek is addictive.

Jluker1126......welcome to the forum......where do you hang your hat or call home.  It helps if we all know what part of the world you live, when it comes to answering a lot of questions.

I am in central Alabama. This will be my second year bee keeping and I am up to 4 hives. The wife and kids really enjoy them so we have not decided where to draw the line yet. Have an awesome mentor and actually did my first cut-out the other day with a friend that is also getting started.

Sorry, got caught up in building my hive and forgot to come back... :) I'm in Colorado and our package arrives tomorrow!!! Of course, it's snowing, so probably won't be able to hive the bees right away. Just made them some sugar syrup.

You will do great.  I went to school north of you in Laramie.  I say that as useless information, not to try to impress you.  :-D

Welcome! Where in Colorado are you? My daughter and son-in-law will be stationed in Colorado Springs after he finishes his additional Army training.

Hi, Scott - we're north of Denver in Longmont (near Boulder).

The hiving went well.  Except I accidentally smooshed a few bees when I was shaking out the package and then lost all confidence in myself. :/ Got my first sting by freaking out just a bit.... called a beek friend who helped me hive the second package and assured me I was doing okay. :)  The bees are happy, at least one queen is out (checked the next day and the first cage was empty, second cage still had a bit of marshmallow in it).  Will check that second hive today just to make sure, but trying not to bug them too much. They are draining sugar water about a pint a day, and saw some full pollen sacks arriving at the hives yesterday.

Supposed to snow (UGH!!) again this Wednesday - do I need to do anything to the hives to prepare for that?
