Title: JP And Emil Remove Honey Bees Down In Shell Beach, Louisiana
Post by: JP on October 23, 2010, 02:33:44 pm
This one was about 15' up between floor joists of a raised camp/trailer. The bees were very gentle and were making and capping goldenrod honey.

Right when we got up to the hive I could smell the distinct "sweaty socks" aroma goldenrod honey is famous for.

Delicious, delicious, delicious honey. Did I say it was good?  ;)

Emil, a young lad of 25 was my assistant on this one. Sometimes you just can't get Schawee to budge off those Burger Delight vanilla shakes.  :-D  I gave him first dibs but, he couldn't break away...

Emil is an interesting young fellow who installs solar panels and does "aquaponics", growing plants in water fertilized by the fish that live in that water. Very cool concept!

I met Emil while removing that colony at the Ramada Inn in the Crape Myrtle tree.

Emil started keeping bees about two years ago and has a few Russian hives and now this Italian one.

He's not afraid to jump right in and was a big help on this cut out.

Emil found the queen on a cinder block next to where we were cutting our comb sections.

I happened to joke with him hours earlier that that was where we'd probably find her.

Little did I know that that would come true.

How nice to end the day with the queen we could have easily left behind.

JP, those glasses made you look smart.   :-D  I was waiting for one to pop you on the nose when you were eating honey right off the comb.  Another great video.

I forgot to mention that on this removal I had a bee go into my left ear. I almost jumped from the ladder, couldn't get to the ground faster!

I went next door in the lights and miraculously the bee turned around and came out of my ear.

That was some of the most tense moments in my adult life!

Emil said "man, maybe you should start wearing ear plugs".

Do you think Schawee owns stock in the Burger Delight?   Just what are they putting in those shakes?   Does the DEA know about that place?

What a happy, happy ending finding that queen before it was totally dark.  I could not believe you were licking that honey with the bees crawling all over it. For some reason, this video made me feel like I wish it was me working with you and not Emil.

Just started to dream a bit :-D :-D

Another nice one JP. It sure nice seeing hives going to other beekeepers. They must love getting calls from you.

Working from the ladder is never a really fun job, but with the good size of this colony it makes it worth it.

Great video and as always Thanks for sharing it with us!

:lau:

Maybe Schawee's kin is running Burger Delight, never did ask him.  :idunno:

Emil came by yesterday afternoon to bring me back my queen catcher and entrance closure and said the bees are doing fine.

I gave him all but one zip lock bag full of honey. He must of gone home with ten bags full, says he's been eating it like pop corn. :-D

Good on ya, JP and Emil.  I need to get a different program or update our internet so I can watching videos without massive amounts of buffering that that massive amounts of time to watch.  I couldn't wait to watch the end, it was taking so long, a work in progress here with the internet.  Ich.

I think that you may have taught a very valuable lesson here for any people that have bees go into their ears  .  Bees do go to the light, that is known, so anytime a bee goes in an ear, head for the light, smiling.  Things learned, and sorry that you had such a tense moment.  Bees love to go in my Sister's left ear, must be something sweet in there, smiling that big smile.  Beautiful days, with health and lots of love.  Cindi

I guess I should have included some video footage of what my jacket looked like before I took it off.

A solid, sticky mess!

Cooking video is coming, just hold on a lil longer.  ;)

I think it is all about the scent your body puts off.   Bees eat honey.   JP eats honey.   They both might smell the same.   So JP is just a big sister to them.   Look at how much honey JP eats on camera.   Straight from the bees.   That has to have something to it.  Or maybe from him pouring honey all over himself from the cutout.
