Hello from Douglasville, GA.
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:18:28 pm »
Just getting started in bee keeping.  My hives will be here around the 15th of March and I will be getting my first 2 nucs from Don aka the Fat bee man.  All though he doesn't look that fat to me.  Absolutely can't wait to get started. I will be retiring from my job in 4 years and really hope I will enjoy bee keeping and be able to supplement my income from my bees.  Glad to be here.

Welcome to the forum from just up the road from you.   And on the income, most don't cover their costs.  I never made any money the first 10 years or so I would guess.   But still loved every minute of working them.

Honestly don't really care about the money but would be nice.  Just looking forward to working with the bees.  It was kinda my wifes idea.  Every time we see an observation hive somewhere I would just sit and watch them. So one day she said you should try that.  It really helps to have the backing of your wife.  God love her.  :)

2425,
Welcome to the forum, lots of good folks here willing to share their knowledge...Just got started myself with 2 Nucs exactly one month ago.  It's been AWESOME!  I'm really enjoying it.

Guessing on what I've invested so far, Allen is probably right on the profit potential.  :)

Although, that's not my primary goal at the moment.  I think some people do well with it.  Are you planning on doing this with Honey production alone, or are you interested in doing cut outs, catching swarms, selling bees, queens, etc. etc.

Good luck and above all, enjoy your new found addiction....I know I have!

Hoping to do a little of everything. Will probably focus on queens.  Really too early to tell.  Who knows, I might really suck at this.  One thing I am really interested in seeing is if my garden will have an increase yield due to having bee in close proximity. This is almost too exciting.  Everyone I've talked to has been sooooo helpful. It is just amazing.  Don't see how I can fail with all the help that is out there.  Everyone wants you to succeed.  Not at all like the corporate world where everyone tries to tear you down and hope you will fail so they can get ahead. Very refreshing.

Well another step to being a bee keeper.  Got my first shipment of frames from Mann Lake today. Will be getting my  :) frames from Walter Kelley's on Tuesday.  Can't wait.... Hives should be here around March 1st from Bob Owen at Ozark Cedar Hives. Then my bee will arrive around the 1st of April.  This is truly one of the most exciting endeavours I have ever embarked on.    :)

I am going for small cell bees.

Mann Lakes are their PF120's. They are one piece plastic frame and foundation in one and are small cell.

The ones from Kelly and foundationless frames with the starter strip already built in.

I will be getting two small cell nucs in April and will put one on the Mann lakes and one on the foundationless to see which will do better.

I would really like to go all foundationless eventually.

Doen't Don make his own small cell foundation?   I knew he had a couple of mills a few years back.

welcome on board.

The only way I have been able to cover coast is producing my own equipment. Just my time spent on fabrication of boxes from trees on my property. my time spent in the shop is my mental break from the world gone mad.

John

I hope to open a place here in middle ga. to offer a place to get equipment and place to extract  for the area beeks who also don't have the space or money to extract there honey. this is my dream for when I retire.hopefully soon in the next few years. sooner if I get laid off.

Yes, Don does make his own wax foundation. He still has his mills and also has a class on making your own foundation.

To Divemaster1963:

I to retire in about 4 years. Hope to eventually build my own boxes and maybe sell some. Just want to find a way to make ends meet in retirement.  Very tired of the rat race and being unappreciated by to company I work for. I am very good at what I do and hope it will translate into bee keeping.

Hope to do a similar set up to yours here in west Georgia.

I wish you luck.

Welcome to the forum, David.  Sounds like you have a good long range plan for retirement. :)

What?  You mean beekeepers have been helpful to you?  I'm just a second year beek but I've found beekeepers to always be ready to talk and help with bees.  I bumped into a guy the other day and we got to talking about honey bees and using those thin rubber gloves to keep from getting stings...thirty minutes later an announcement came over the pa system calling for him...seems they wanted him in the operating room to do the emergency quadruple bypass surgery that he was supposed to have started 30 minutes before....he did have an interesting take on surgical gloves, though.  Honest, that's a true story!!!! :-D  I also have beachfront property for sale here in Crenshaw County.

Watch those PF120's in regards to hiding places for small hive beetles.
