SHB tray trap in bottom board
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:09:59 pm »
i have 1 of the screened bottom boards with the SHB tray trap. does anyone put a screen in the plastic tray? i have a lot of dead bees in the oil & only a  few beetles. i think the screen would keep the bees out of the oil & allow the beetles to fall thru. i do not think i'm over-run with beetles & i'm trying to keep it that way. i guess the bees are there trying to find their way back into the hive.......

Block the tray opening with a block of wood to keep the bees out.

checked it again this evening & now it seems the oil is attracting ants. steady trail of ants coming up the concrete blocks & into the tray, not into the hive. they were not there before.

How do the SHB make their way into the hive?

SHB's  crawl into the hives and proceed to lay eggs?
SHB eggs are contracted in yonder field and carried into the hive and then hatch?

SHB will climb right into the hive through any opening.  They will live in the corners and cracks in the hive and feed on anything in the hive.  They they lay eggs in the hive.  Eggs hatch and makes a mess of things in the hives.  The adults will stay in the hive as long as they can.  There is more food for the beetles in the hive than outside the hive.
