A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay; A swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon; A swarm of bees in July isn't worth a fly.

What size is the entrance? How is the bee population of the hive in question?

I am going to add your pics, but you need an entrance reducer on if your getting more than the bees can handle. I am assuming by winter side, you have the bottom board flipped with the narrow opening next to the box?

I am with Ken.  From the pics, it looks like the bees are addressing the intruders.  You probably just need a smaller area for them to have to defend.

I would agree with the other post, the entrance needs to be reduced down to around 1" to 3/4". I would also add a robbing screen for a day or two.
