Mite Away Quick Strips recieve Federal Approval
« on: February 10, 2011, 03:11:22 pm »
quick strips are now registered in the states by the EPA.   They still need to be registered by each state before they become available.  With a section 3 federal registration it should be quick and easy for state registration

I noticed that Dadant and Brushy had already advertised them in their 2011 catalog.

they are in the catalogs but can only be sold in a couple of states with section 18 emergency registrations.   This section 3 will open the door for the rest of the states

Is a bit more expensive maybe then some treatments but being its only a 7 day treatment and you dont have to come back and deal with it Im willing to pay four buck per colony.  Also if you use apistan it says one strip per five frames.  Two broods equals four strips so that would make apistan more expensive if you only need two mite away strips.  Plus you can treat on a flow which is awesome.  No more pulling supers and losing honey crops to treat.  No more worry about treating early enough for winter bees if you push a last honey crop.  Stuff sounds to good to be true.  I sure hope its the real deal.

I've been using mite-away 2 pads in the fall for the last couple of years with good results. I wonder if these are going to replace those or just be another option in the product line. I doubt that I would use them with supers on. if I have a heavy infestation during flow I'll either dust with powdered sugar or just pull the supers and treat.

Thanks Jay
I had not seen it.   I talked with Hansen a couple of days after the federal approval and he told me he was forwarding the link so they all had a heads up that it was coming.  Maybe this is why it came through so fast.  Thanks again Dan

I have recently tried the mite away quick strips. I applied them yesterday about 1:30 PM. This moring one of the hives had clusters of bees outside the hive, and I also noticed numerous dead bees in front of the hive. I know I applied the strips according to instructions and in the right quantity. Has anyone had a similar experience.

has anyone heard of the risk of queen loss?  I have read studies using formic acid in flash treatments like this that killed mites under the cappings and there was a pretty high risk of queen loss.

Im a bit concerned.

the stuf is to new to now-i got it on 80 hives for a test yard i will let you know
the mortality rate if any-as far as any dead bees that is not a big deal for me -many old forage
bees have a hard time with any mite treatmeant that is a added stress-and it seams to me it
has to have some stress to be efective-RDY-B
