I live in Sweden most beekeepers here use polystyrene hives , I have a college that has a poly hive that is 30 years old , probably needs a new coat of paint  ;)
The poly hive is light weight , easy to move , = spares your back = can keep beekeeping when your old and frail , or if you're Young and not so strong.

Warm in the winter , spring ,for brood. It also insulates against heat in the summer sun

Ventilation is a little backwards.

Spring and summer fall reduce the bottom ventilation , = earlier start for brood , easier for young bees to sweat wax , draw comb.

In the winter open the ventilation over the bottom of the hive ventilates condensation lets air in despite  of dead bees.

31 yrs. beekeeping...

There is  an obvious contradiction in Finski’s two recommendations, but you can't see it.
So, what is the value of your experience?

31 yrs. beekeeping, no chemicals, no sugar syrup, no medication, no lost hives since 2008.

48 years beekeeping, chemicals yes, wintering  with sugar syrup, medication yes, every year partial hive losses not starving but mostly queen problems. I keep 20% spare hives to avoid problems.

Cary, put your location in your profile.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.

Finski is working with a language barrier here.  You need to accept this fact and read between the lines and use some common sense when reading his posts.

Rock on Finski!

Scott
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
