I want to relocate a beehive about 500 yards from its present home.
I was advised to seal entrance during the night.
Then move the hive at least 5 miles from home and leave it there for at least a week.
Then move it back to the new location.
Is there a simpler way?

Yes, move it to it's new location at night. Place some brush in front of the opening. The brush will force the bees to reorient when they emerge the following day.
