how does the rank system work?

hello! not really sure where i should have posted this but, im interested in how the ranking system works and the variables that come in to play. thanks!
positives need negatives to be opposite to, or else there is no measure of difference.

I copied this from my admin panel via screen shot. It's a simple post count system based ranking.
