This was our first shot at bee-lining and it worked great! It took about 6 hrs or so but we ended up finding a well hidden bee yard with over 400 hives 2 1/2 mi away.

Man Scott, you guys outdid yourselves on this one. Helped Doug out big time! Just loved this video you guys put together. It was a lot of fun following you on your journey to find the bee's home.

Thanks Bro...glad you liked it! We had a lot of fun with it and learned a new tool for working bees.
It turns out that the beekeeper is really well known and a bit nefarious. He's tried to sneak bees into Doug's area several times in years past but this time he got caught :-D Peggy told his crew "Tell your boss that there is no place he can hide bees that we couldn't find them." I hope he has learned a lesson!

Not to be a sour puss but does the guy really have to move his apiary just because y'all found them? Is it not legal for him to keep them there? It would seem to me that he would possibly move them as a kind gesture to keep the peace with Doug but is he really in the wrong here?

I keep seeing bees at the farm when I don't have bees there. Several times I watched them collect pollen from the bahia grass and watched until they were full of pollen and then I would see them head SW towards the forest. I would like to bee able to collect the feral hives that get left behind from the gig bee companies that keep there bees there in the spring. They all went the same direction. I suspect from the point you made that it would bee very hard to follow them thought the forest.

Good question JP. What's stopping the owner from saying, "Well, I can't control my bees so they're staying where they are"?

JP, This apiary borders (right on the line) the Edgewater border. The city has anti bee laws that are old and generally not enforced but could come into play here. The county also has nuisance animal laws if need be.
It's not so much that the beek is acting illegally, but rather unethically. As I wrote, he's been known to pull this in the past. He's moving them south anyway so it's all moot for now.

Cool Y'all. My uncle used to tell me that he would dust them with flour or powdered sugar so that they would be white and easier to see as they flew away. I never have tried it but he was a straight shooter and I believe it would work.

Cool Vid, I grew up bee lining with the oldtimers just used sugar water in pie tins set on fence posts to track them, neat idea playing catch and release like that!

Nice video. I would really like to try this sometime. I have bees that come and rob the honey dripped in the bed of my truck when it is parked at work, I always wondered where the hive is.

I'm not sure if this reply should go in the humor section or if I should just make the point that you are a very bad influence, Hardwood.
I saw quite a few bees in the windmill tank a couple of days ago, where someone recently had hives but has moved them. So I thought I too would try my hand at beelining today. It was hot enough for a hen to lay a hard boiled egg, so I thought a fair few would be down there drinking. I must say though, that your video is neglectful as to HOW to catch them. The tank is not small and it had to be done up a ladder. There were not as many bees as I'd thought, about 4 at a time and periods with none. They were racing around. We had a net and a finch box - the wrong finch box. We'd left the good one with the rubber entrance at home. After a long period of time we managed to catch about 20 after I got the hang of it, but this is not how many we ended up with. As I tried to relocate them from the net into the box, two more would escape or sting me. My offsider finally went back to get the good finch box but by then the numbers had dropped off around the water. We floured and let go one at a time the 3 we were left with. I could follow them for about 10 or 15 yards then they disappeared. And all went in different directions. Two of them though went towards the neighbours' fence where a cow had a new calf on our side of the fence and there were several mickey bulls bellowing on the other side. We couldn't have brought the dog because the cow would have upped it. So we went home, satisfied that we'd released our last bee and no more knowledgable as to where they resided.

Lone, sorry to here you had a hard go at beelining but don't give up!
We had lots of bees to work with and simply sucked them up with a bee vacuum. That gave us plenty of bees to mess around with. Maybe a little later in your season when your flows weaken you can set a capture box out baited with honey to get more bees? The more bees you catch the better. We'd release 3-4 at a time and try to follow them. That in itself was a learning curve as many would spiral upward and be quite hard to see by the time they headed home. It helps to have an eagle-eyed partner!

local municipal/County/home owners association / board of health.A no buzz zone are laws against /regulating density and possibly no beekeeping

FL does not have no fly zones. As long as you follow the best methods and practices you are good.
