Title: Middendorf's---Famous Catfish Restaurant Underwater
Post by: JP on September 28, 2008, 01:05:41 pm
This place is well known for its crispy very thin fried catfish. I have eaten there many times over the yrs. It is located approx 30 minutes from my home. The building will be torn down and I'm pretty sure they will rebuild, but its a shame when the original is gone, just like yankee stadium.

Ike was the culprit.

Update-the building is still there, and was open for business today!!! Would love to know how they pulled that one off.

JP  I read they are going to rebuild the restaurant higher to avoid the floods so the true original building will go. they will try to take all the stuff from the old building into the new(doors, fixtures, Etc.). Hopefully it will do okay. When I was a kid my Father would take us there when we were out fishing or riding in the boat we would stop in there for lunch, cool memories.

Rebuilding both bldgs higher would def make sense, I heard they were taking down the original bldg but was surprised to see it up and running. Great place to eat.

guess I need to navigate these threads a little more. Wasn't aware that the restaurant had closed . It's been many years since I was there somewhere around 15. It used to be my wife and I favorite place . When we moved to Washington Parish ,it just got too far to drive. We stared going to Mike's catfish in Amite City, where I was born but, the fish has become untasty over the last few trips there.

At Middendorfs I used to start off with a 1/2 doz. raw oysters then have the catfish. Today my wife and i have been married 41 years .Think I'll see about going there next weekend.

How about meeting there next Saturday Dec. 6 2008 for an early evening dinner?
Dutch treat ofcourse.  PM, both of you .

I wish that I could go! I love raw oysters.....shuck em and suck em of the shell. Fried catfish is not bad either.

Jimmy, apparently they closed just a short while but they are indeed open and always busy, as usual.

I get the large crunchy catfish how about you?

I like the thin sliced and fried done but, not crunchey . Same with Fried Oysters .

I'm really building a good appitite . There use to be 2 restaurant building one was for overflow on heavy weekends. I first went there in the late 60's .

Are you ready for some catfish this Saturday?

I meant to say thin and crispy, not crunchy, don't know how that slipped out!

As for this Sat will have to talk with the wife, not sure where we will be this weekend. She just got back from New York tonight. I will let you know. At the very least I may need a raincheck.

being from N O ,LA remember the rest. but can't quite remember where it was located. Looks like on the Lakefront but not sure where.
Does anyone know if  "Veras" is still there in Slidell, that was a great rest to eat at always full and the best food. Dozen oysters first and watch them get sucked, then a big bowl of gumbo,  never knew exactly which one you would get as they made it from everything including the kitchen sink. Then a seafood platter, never could finish it but lots of good leftovers for your next snack.

deantn : The place we are talking about is off I-55 at Manshac,La. I-55 crosses the body of water between Lake Ponchatrain and Lake Marapaw(spelling).
Katrina wiped alot of thing out in Slidell 2005. Not sure where" Veras" was located. Before the huricane my wife and I used to go to Longhorn's on Gause Blvd. in Slidell for excellent steaks. However that was knocked out by Katrina and has not reopened ,to my knowledge.

Yes now that you said where it was at remember it well.
"Veras" is off of Gause Rd. just before crossing the Hwy11 bridge turn left and go to the end of the road on the right. You could see it from I-10 going into NO before crossing the hump. Had great food there.
Was down there for a funeral three years ago but didn't have time to go and see if it was still there or not. Looked in phone book and they listed one on thee hwy. going toward Covington but not sure if that is the same one.

When you go in and pull those hives out of buildings, what do you do with the bees and honey?  It is just unbelievable some of the stuff you get into.  It looks like a foreign country to me down there!

I give my customers most of the honey, keep some for me, some for the bees.

I try not to keep more than fifty hives and many go to new people starting up or to friends building their apiaries.

One such friend is Bailey http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fk4YyU0ziIK9_ubAu5rB7w?feat=directlink

I give him bees and we go fishing also. He is trying to build his apiary to 150 plus. Between the two of us we will get there soon.

Here are some others that I have given bees to: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/kquItCg1RvFA87nrSiQ2DQ?feat=directlink

K9, I don't believe they make shakes but the catfish is what you go there for. Go to Burger Delight for a shake.  ;)
