Nylon Mesh Fabric
« on: July 25, 2011, 11:16:02 am »
I am looking for a good place to order small sized nylon mesh under 1/8 inch holes.
Anyone know of a place that sells it by the yard.

Try Home Depot or Lowes. Will be cheaper in the long run to buy a roll as you will save on shipping fees.

I should be shot. My dad is 3 generation commercial freshwater fisherman and I didn't think of Memphis. Heck dad took me to MN&T as a kid back when he thought it was cheaper to pick up his supplies probably was but its so much easier to ship. I called them they have it their website is somewhat hard to navigate thats why I called.

Thanks,

Michael

Can't take the heat me and the sowing machine have a date. My suit is getting vents and so are the gloves. I can't afford a 300 dollar suit but I can afford 20 bucks of mesh.

I am already down to wearing lonely boxers under the suit and still I almost fell out yesterday and it was cool comparatively.

That being the case, I would check with Joe Ann Fabrics and Walmart (fabric section).  Both have a large supply of nylon tulle (i.e. wedding veil stuff)

To answer the second part of your original question, YES, both JA Fabrics and Walmart sell tulle by the yard.  It is very low cost; typically around a dollar a yard.  They have an asortment of different colors and different weights of tulle to choose from.

Wow, no fabric section and they’re a “super” walmart?  I can’t recall ever being in a walmart that did not have a fabric section.  Normally across from the CDs.

Other options might be Hobby Lobby or Garden Ridge, but I don’t know for sure about those two.

Tulle comes in various mesh sizes and thickness.  The standard wedding tulle would be appropriate for head gear, but you might want to go with heavier weight (more durable) tulle for other parts of your outfit.  The bridal tulle doesn’t hold up long term when exposed to UV.  It’s not as mechanically strong as a typical bee suit mesh either, but it is abundant and it is cheap.

Hobby lobby is 112 miles from here and I have no clue what garden ridge is or where one would be.

I think I am going with MN&T the 1/16 has 35lb tare resistance about 7 bucks a yard though should hold up to UV good though I have had the bigger stuff before.

The MM&T route sounds like a good idea, it will last longer.

Garden Ridge is a large southern based craft and hobby store.  There’s one in Memphis.

Good luck with the retro fit.

Look up Nat and no-see-um's jackets for fly fishin.
I had one from years ago gave it to a guy who was wearing
a Mesh wash bag with holes for his arms (crazy )
He then was at a local sporting goods store and bought
the last 2 they had on a close-out for 5 dollars each
Bug Tamer the name Brand I guess is putting a hurt
on the older style mesh jackets ??
Maybe Bass-pro or Cabalas has them they used to be cheap

TommyT has a good option here.  If you do a search on Amazon for mosquito suit, you’ll find a lot of relatively low cost breezy suit options.  The bees can’t get you as long as the mosquito suit sits a few millimeters off your skin.  My mom has a mosquito suit and offered it to me to use during our heat wave, but I declined since I didn’t want to damage it.  I did try it on though; it was very breezy.

The downside of a mosquito/no see um suit is the mesh size is much smaller than a bee suit and that makes them harder to see thru.

If you go to my site and look at the video I have on marking queens. You will see that my first hood and the one I used last night was just made out of window screen a coat hanger and 2 mesh bags I cut open and reworked.

Other beekeepers might think it looks funny but overall the general public thinks everything we do looks stupid. Why spend a ton of money for your in-laws to say hey look at that idiot on the riding lawn mower with a veil on.
