What type of bee is this queen?
« on: May 01, 2007, 08:29:24 pm »

It's a bit blurry I have a camera that's not too good for macro.  Is it a Carny?

If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

wow...I have one in my wild hive and she is very light.....any ideas? She is not dark at all and is pale in comparison. The hive is gentle, so I wasnt thinking African...but she could be a very distant relative of one of my swarmed colonies....any thoughts? :?

The funny thing is, of my three hives, this particular queen is the only one I can find every time.  In the other two hives, all I see is brood today. So in two of three hives, the queen was present and laying on Saturday.

Could it be a really dark Carniolan?

Carniolans are considered more gentle by some keepers, at least by the one that recommended I start with them...  As I understand, coloration isn't the best way to judge, but that queen is so dark...

I did a quick search and I found that the Carniolan queens are very dark.

The packages I got with NWC had dark queens like that, I was a little surprized I almost thought I had been give black german queens but the bees were way too tame for that.  Also the MH queen was dark but not black and the Italian queen was golden.  I understand that Russians queens tend to run to black also.  The causcasian queens I had, once upon a time, were more gray in color.

queens appearence has little to do with her daughters, at least i noticed so. whenever i see a queen i see her because she's so light, and i have all Carnis. i'm gonna check my bees today, hopefully i'll take a few pics, i'll try to get the queens.

Mkangelo.  Nice picture.  I would say without a doubt that she is Carniolan.  Mine looks like her too.  Have a wonderful day, great life, great health wishes for all.  Cindi

i took at least a dozen of pics, she just wouldn't cooperate, hehe. this one seems the best, at least to me. anyway, what i wanted to say is that, look the queen is almost yellow! yet, she is indeed a pure Carni and her daughters don't resemble her one bit!

It is a carniolan. Beside has darker color, carniolan has also longer but thinner abdoman as compared to Italian. It is true that carniolan is more gently. Be careful they are good swarmer too.

I have two carniolan, and 2 italian queens.  I can not tell the difference by looking at them, they are both very dark like the queen you have.  From what I know about other insect species, and Tarantulas, judging a species by color physical appearance is spotty at best.

I honestly think that the queens we have may be a bit of both :p  [italian and carniolan, or whatever...  Since I know mine are not instrumentally inseminated, that is no way to concretely guarantee the race of queen and offspring.]
