Title: Is there anybody out there? Let us hear your voice.
Post by: JP on November 06, 2007, 02:04:44 am
I was checking the members list and noticed that many of our members have not posted, not even once. Lets hear from you guys that haven't posted. Just say hello, it can't hurt, can it? Hello, is there anybody out there?

JP, that is kind of weird eh?  Maybe these members thought that they might get a chance to post or thought that they had to be a member to read the posts on the forum.  Maybe they are the ones that just like to read, and not participate. It will be interesting if we see any new forum members beginning to post now, that would be cool eh?  Have a wonderful and great day on this great earth.  Cindi

My brother did a study with a research firm in the UK a few years ago that claimed that the average participatory phase in most internet forums lasts about 2 to 4 weeks. Many of these people remain as "members" but the visible activity continues with a smaller member core. Speaking for myself, it takes a huge effort; I really don't like computers and being inside, sitting down, etc in general. Much prefer to be out with the horses, bees, coaching soccer, building something. But I have supplimented my knowledge here so I try to make the time when I can. I have turned a lot of people onto this forum who have never posted though I know they do look in often.

Zoot.  I feel the same way you do.  I make my living working with computers.  gee that was a mistake.  I started out as an aircraft mechanic.  I should have stayed working with my hands.

Now I sit in an office somewhere not even able to watch life pass me by.  So on the weekends and afterwork you are hard up to find me on the net....

I have recently been diagnosed with bladder cancer, so I will be inside alot more often and online alot more.  I will make an effort to contribute instead of absorbing from this great forum.  Fortunately I have my girls just about ready for a long Michigan winter.  I have a couple still taking sugar water. First snow flurries today.

bee safe!

I got my first flurries of snow today as well. It was calm this morning then the wind picked up by leaps and bounds here the snow is!

Love how that works. 70 one day and 32 the next.

I gotta go get my winter clothes out now.

We have cool weather tonite, the front came through all day, getting colder, but we are way down south so snow flurries, not if we get real lucky. Now its definitely a possibility at our property in Ms. I love the cold weather! Wish we had more of it, seems we did, I know we had more yrs ago, oh well, global warming and all. :)

It will be good for your soul and health to stay here with us and help beekeepers who need the help. As a 2nd year beekeeper, I can truly say that every response I receive is like a god send to me. If you have some good knowledge, it is good to share. I feel for you with this diagnosis, but keep your spirits up and remain positive. Stay close to us and post frequently.

JP, so glad you found him at least  :-D ;) :)

bud1.  So, dipping the feet in oil, hmmm??? Define what type of oil, I would imagine cooking?  Before I would go to effort of dipping, my Sister and I have to check and see if the scaley feet chickens are laying or not.  That means picking them up.....eeeks!!!!  Just kidding.  The amount of work that we have done in the past couple of days with the chickens and yard, etc., just picking up a couple and tagging them (for, guess what?) if they aren't laying would be nuthin' at all.   Hee, heee......have a wonderful and beautiful day in this great life.  Cindi

Well, since you asked I suppose I'll introduce myself.   I'm in central KY, have 2 hives and this is my second year w/ bees.  this year I harvested about 10 gal of honey.  I was thrilled with all of that, and had no trouble at all selling it : )  I'm hoping to expand next year to at least 4 hives.

Other stuff I'm into is farming and bluegrass music.  I play some banjo on the side.  I'm getting a teaching degree right now, so I'll be a high school math teacher come next fall.

You realize of course that there is a downside to working with your hands - relatively low pay. Currently I make my living as a woodcarver/artist but my life would be far, far more difficult if I didn't have a person in my life who makes a good wage.

Zoot,  I am familiar with the downside of manual labor.  It is the only reason that keeps me coming back to this office.  Although I know some union folks that make the same as I do.

I will not work this job too terribly long, just long enough to bank on a retirement.  Hopefully that is only 10 years away....

CBEE I was working on the planes regardless if they were on the line or in the hangar.  I worked on KC130s.  Airframes/Hydraulics mech for 4 years.

I should have stayed.  I would be an E8 now.  Maybe E9.  The only time it sucked being out on the line was when it was raining at night time.  Hard to see and you were wet and cold.

Ok, I'll play ..... Hello!
I am from Southern New Jersey. This is my first year with the Honey Bees.
Currently I have 2 two deep hives. Heavy, and ready for Winter.
I Will expand to 4 hives this up coming spring season.
I enjoy using the Carniolan race of bees, they are extreamly gentle.
Where I live, I need this trait due to neighbors being housed so close together.
Hopefully next season I will be able to get some honey from the yard.

Regards,
Bill from NJ

I'm glad a few people are saying hello, its nice to see some new faces. Hey, I tried doing voice chat myself a month or so ago maybe longer and had some complications. I think the system was down or had changed servers or something so I backed off to wait and see if things cleared up, so it seems. Will try again soon. Keep those posts coming!!!!

Ken, haa, ha, ha, you are a funny man.  Actually, I rarely use the phone and rarely answer it, only if I have to, I let my Husband answer it.  No one I want to talk to usually, hee, hee.  I hate to talk on the phone, everyone who knows me knows that, hee, hee.

I actually did try out the ventrillo quite a few months ago, it was discombubulating (what a word eh?).  It was too weird for me.   In all honesty, I may still try out the chat room one day, it does hold some intrigue.  But you have to help me along with this.

I am not one that does well at all with crowds, I am rather reclusive by nature.  So, how on earth when you have a bunch of people in a chat room can one get a word in edge wise.  I can picture in my mind's eye, 10 people all trying to talk at once, or each other interrupting each other, no one getting a word in edge wise.  So, tell me, how do you get around that?  That kind of noise would be overwhelming to me, and I can't stand confusion.  Tell me a little bit about how this is overcome, you have caught my interest slightly  :? :-D ;) :) :)  Have a wonderful and beautiful day on our great planet, Earth. Cindi

Post by: Jerrymac on November 08, 2007, 12:44:35 pm
Cindi WOW. I am exactly the same way. I hate trying to do business over the phone. I never call anyone unless I just have to and if some one calls they do all the talking. I usually don't have anything to say. And you are correct on those crowds. Too much noise. If there is more than three people in a room I usually go some where else. Hate eating out for the same reason. Too much noise.

The thing is Cindi, some people can actually focus on one thing and tune the rest out. I hear everything all the time. Some one talking to me while at the same time I am catching voices off of two TVs, while wondering why the dogs are barking out side, knowing what kind of vehicle is out on the highway from the sound it makes, and knowing what crossing the train two miles away is at from the direction of the horn. Why is the water running in the sink, the washer kicked into spin cycle and why isn't my daughter checking on her son in the next room can't they hear him climbing up on stuff.

All that at the same time. No wonder I have headaches. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

I am one of those people who can usually tune everything out except what I want to hear, but I still hate speaking on the telephone and usually do not spend much time on it.

I hate to talk on the phone, always have.  I'd rather drive across town to talk to someone face to face than spend time on the phone.  Also, being a bit hard of hearing I keep telling whoever I'm talking to to slow down so I can understand them.  My ears have slowed down along with the rest of me.

My average phone call is one minute whether someone calls or vice versa.  I hate to hear it ring.  It's a tool, not a toy!  When you have a nail to hammer, you hammer it and put the hammer away.

like brian i don't like using the phone and would rather talk to the person face to face, but a lot of times its not possible and the phone is the next best thing to stay in touch.  in this day of emailing, what i miss most is sending and receiving good old fashion hand written letters and cards!  nothing like a personal touch.

i think about what history we are losing with all this emailing.  i have the letters that my husband used to write when he was overseas.  my mother has the letters from my father.  from my sons, i have printed emails.  it's not the same.  if they had not been printed out, they would have been lost.  how many stories will be lost forever because of this new and impersonal form of contact?  my brother in Afghanistan says that we can find out what he's doing by reading his blog.  will his blog be there forever?  it is not the same as a diary of his adventures.

much of our history comes from journals and diaries and letters.  somehow a blog or an email just doesn't do it for me.

i don't do the phone either.  quiet is good.

>>i think about what history we are losing with all this emailing.

In some far off future some archeologist will come to the conclusion that a world wide epidemic of ignorance swept the late 20th-early 21st century because written records ceased to exist.  The Archeologist would be dumbfounded to find that that corroded rock found in the corners of many homes was actually a Tetrabite hard drive that once contained vast amounts of information.

Jerry, are you my twin Brother?  You and I are identical.  The worst thing that can happen to me is to have a surprise party with a whole lotta people there, you too?

I hear everything, tune in to everything, EVERYTHING, I cannot isolate sounds, if two TVs are on (like you said, I am confused), yep, dogs barking, etc., etc., it drives me nuts!!!!  If there was one thing that I could change about myself, that would be the first, an ability to "tune things out", other than that I am perfect (hee, hee)   :-D ;) :)  Others would beg to differ with that statement  :)

Ha, Brian, that is one funny thought.  Maybe this paperless world is gonna be a humdinger come many years from now.  Have a wonderful and great day, great health and life.  Cindi

Are you talking birthday? Nope don't do it. I can't remember the last time I even had a cake on my birthday. I just don't celebrate my B-day. And just don't care for parties. Why go to a place where there are a bunch of noisy people and do the same thing I could do alone? (on another topic I asked what was fun and why was it fun. Don't think I was taken seriously.)

Jerry, talkin' about a birthday party that was thrown for me many years ago, it was a surprise and I hated it!!!!  I don't like surprises.  My life is orderly, very routine oriented.  My Husband even knows that if he wants to say, go for dinner, he needs to tell me ahead of time so I can plan for it, like I mean tell me in the morning, not an hour before he wants to go, hee, hee.  I can't stand noise and confusion I guess.  It annoys me terribly  :( :)  Have a wonderful and great day.  Cindi

I haven't been on here much lately. Been busy doing things which need more attention.

>I hear everything, tune in to everything, EVERYTHING, I cannot isolate sounds, if two TVs are on (like you said, I am confused), yep, dogs barking, etc., etc., it drives me nuts!!!!

I know what you mean, there are some things that drive me nuts too, like that picture about two posts up that won't sit still. It's really aggravating on my eyes and makes it hard to read. I know I can turn it off but then I can't see other peoples' pictures that I like to see. The eyeball in the circle that moves back and forth is really aggravating to my eyes too. When I run across a post with those pictures I'll usually skip them and those around them because they are too distracting and aggravating to me. Needless to say I miss out on some discussions I might otherwise respond to.

Old Timer.  Right, you must have been busy, haven't seen ya for awhile.  Eeeew.  I know what you mean about the moving pictures.  That is the avitar of Understudy (Brendhan) (the eyeball) and JP (the bear thing waving its hands).  Those pictures annoy me terribly too, and I have mentioned this before (remember guys? (Brendhan and JP, hee, hee).

I have learned to ignore them, but they still catch my eye and bug the bug out of me.  But oh well.  That is really too bad that it bugs you as much as you say, that you don't read these two guys posts, they have alot of good stuff to say.

Old Timer.  I wonder if you sent a PM to one of the moderators of the forum if they could help you to maybe "turn off" something that would not have the motion in the avitar pictures of these two forum friends.  It is worth a try (if you find out, tell me how to as well, because I would just as soon not see the motion in avitars).  Have a wonderful and great day.  Cindi
