Hello from West Central Florida
« on: July 17, 2011, 10:17:16 pm »
Greetings.  I have had a Langstroth brood hive in my yard since last fall, courtesy of my son.  I put a medium super on it in the Spring and today we harvested our first crop of honey.  We are very pleased with the taste, full bodied and delicious.  We left some honey on the frames for the bees, and still got about two gallons.  We also expanded the hive by adding another brood section and another medium super.  I also have a Top Bar Hive that I started a few weeks ago with some bees from under a mobile home.  The TBH is doing quite well also, but needs to get stronger.  I enjoy woodworking and the bees give me an excuse to build things (hives, escapes, covers, etc.).  Nice web forum, looking forward to gathering information and learning.  Regards to all.

Glad to see another FL beek!  Just watch the small hive beetles and you'll do fine.

Welcome!

How about AHB?  Are they a problem in south Florida?

I've never seen a bona fide "africanized" colony here. Reports of "killer bees" are highly sensationalized.  Most cases of so-called AHB turn out to be run of the mill cranky bees nailing some poor sod.  One guy in my local beek assn. claims to have an AHB hive he keeps for bragging rights, but it can't be verified, since local law demands all suspected Africanized colonies be destroyed.
