My First Cutout - CrossPointe Academy "Cavalier Bees'
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:47:54 pm »
While scoping out a place to put a swarm trap last week, I discovered an existing colony in the underside of an old storage trailer on the property of a small private school. My wife and 12 yr old daughter decided they wanted in on the fun also.  They were very excited to be a part and loved every minute of it.  It’s possible these bees will be relocated back over to the schools property for an agricultural program they’re considering in the future. Hive equipment has been donated to the cause and it’s a neat opportunity to be involved with.  It took us about 2 ½ hours to complete the job.  We filled 9 medium frames with drawn comb and best of all located the queen.  I went back over a couple hours before dark and they had completely oriented to the new hive.  After dark we closed up the entrance and moved them to my bee yard for the time being.  Hope you enjoy the “amateur” video.

Nice job. Even found the queen, that is the hardest part.

Well done, enjoyed the video...

Hadn't seen that configuration on a homemade bee vac before...Very interesting, was that an original design, or something you've seen somewhere else?  Were you pleased with it's performance?

I copied the idea from this post, http://forum.beemaster.com/index.php?topic=13631.0, with some slight modifications.  The cost was about $30 at the hardware store for 2.5” hose, hose fitting and clamps. I had the water bottle, shop vac, #8 hardware cloth and plywood on hand. It took about 2 1/2 hours to assemble. I drilled several small diameter holes along the top and bottom rings to reduce the suction through the hose and to allow for maximum ventilation inside the bottle. I also created a guard on the shop vac side using the plywood and hardware cloth. The suction was just enough to make it a little frustrating and still keep the bees in the bottle from working their way back out of the hose.  I didn’t notice any dead bees in the bottle when we finished.  I think the only improvements that may be beneficial would be to eliminate the bottle neck and use a hose with a slick interior.  Occasionally the bees did clump up inside the hose and I’d have to use some persuasion (shake the hose) to work them into the bottle. That said, I was fairly satisfied with its performance.  We had a great time!

No worries.  It was her first time working with the bees also.  We had a great time and both of them have been sucked into my obsession.  I loved every minute of it.  :-D

Thanks for sharing!  Seeing your daughter smile during the process was precious!  Great family time.  And, you made it look so easy!  I'll have to see if I can get my boys to help out!
