Understand the within the first sentence of this story it says:

the U.S. Department of Agriculture considers all honey bees as Africanized, regardless of location.

I find that a very ignorant stance on behalf of the USDA.

From that article:

"The largest nest I've removed contained more than one million bees located in Amargosa," she said.

Once again...... If the queen lays 2,000 eggs a day it will take 500 days to lay one million eggs. Bees live how long????

hmmm
2000 eggs a day with 100% succes rate with a 40 day shelf life.
This is bad math but we work it that way. Because it isn't going to be 100% and some will live a little longer and many will be shorter. During winter months a bees life can be as long as six months but I understand that laying during that time is minimal(correct me if I am wrong on that)

We also assume the queen starts with zero worker bees. This just has many options from the start that are wrong.

Day 1 queen lays 2000 eggs
Day 2 egg count 4000
Day 3 egg count 6000
Day 4 egg count 6000 larva count 2000
Day 5 egg count 6000 larva count 4000
Day 6 egg count 6000 larva count 6000
Day 7 egg count 6000 larva count 8000
Day 8 egg count 6000 larva count 10000
Day 9 egg count 6000 larva count 12000
Day 10 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 2000
Day 11 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 4000
Day 12 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 6000
Day 13 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 8000
Day 14 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 10000
Day 15 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 12000
Day 16 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 14000
Day 17 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 16000
Day 18 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 18000
Day 19 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 20000
Day 20 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 22000
Day 21 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000
Day 22 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 2000
Day 23 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 4000
Day 24 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 6000
Day 25 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 8000
Day 26 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 10000
Day 27 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 12000
Day 28 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 14000
Day 29 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 16000
Day 30 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 18000
Day 31 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 20000
Day 32 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 22000
Day 33 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 24000
Day 34 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 26000
Day 35 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 28000
Day 36 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 30000
Day 37 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 32000
Day 38 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 34000
Day 39 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 36000
Day 40 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 38000
Day 41 egg count 6000 larva count 12000 pupa count 24000 adult count 38000 dead count 2000

So at this stage not counting drones or any variences at all, in a little over a month you have reached maximum potential of 38000 bees. The cycle stops here because the counts could not be more than 2,000 eggs a day. Even if my calculations are way off. I still think a million bees would an outrageous statement. The maximum cells for brood is 42000 at some stage of development.

So while Jerrymac was pointing out the obvious. ;)
It got me to thinking.
Now what I need is someone to help show me how you can end up with a hive of let's say 100000. I figure if you increase the life span of the bee as an adult.

Maybe the reporter should also find out if the USDA is actually making the stand that all feral colonies should be treated as AHBs.

Sincerely,
Brendhan
