Pollen Patty question
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:46:03 pm »
Can a pollen patty ferment? And if so will this harm the bees?

Thanks

I have had them mold, which didn't seem to bother them. I haven't had any to ferment. SHB love them, tho, so only put out what a hive can consume in a few days.

.
Patty must have 50% sugar that mold or yeast cannot live in that.

I use to make soya flour - yeast - pollen  patty. It the tough makes bubbles, it is fermenting. Then I add sugar to it.

I have seen them turn to maggot pie before.   Watch the beetles.

As the weather warms feed smaller amounts at a time. The bees can clean them up before the SHB's can do any damage by laying in them.  If they don't have pollen in them the SHB's don't find them as attractive. Put wax paper on both side of pattie the SHB's have less area to lay their eggs in. If the bees are not eating it, get it off of the hive.
Winter Ventilation: Wet bees die in hours maybe minutes, no matter how much honey is in the hive.

Would that be anything close to a coconut creme pie in appearance?
