My first cut out.
« on: July 13, 2008, 07:54:56 pm »
With the assistance of one of my employees, Ross, we did a cut out this morning. It was not pretty but thanks to the bee vac that I copied from Robo's design the job went well. I only got stung four times and Ross twice. We did not see the queen. I will check in a few days to see if she is in the hive. We tied all the brood to empty wood frames (about 6 frames) and finished filling the box with drawn comb. When we got back to the house, I simply took the box of vacuumed bees and placed it on top of the brood box. Rob's design is great! We did a crush and strain on the honey; got two gallons.

Getting set up. See my bee vac?

First, a little smoke.

Ross gets access to them.

I regroup after getting stung a couple of times.

Separating the brood from the honey.

Comgratulations on your first removal Steve!!! One question, that last pic's got me curious, what form of martial arts do y'all use to seperate the honey from the brood??  Inquiring minds would like to know. ;) :-D

Yeah, I never thought of karate-chopping the comb to fit.

Congratulations - I just did my third cut out and none of mine looked as good in the aftermath as yours.

I studied in Japan for a couple of years. I think that is more of a shorenji-kempo chop. Just my opinion though. That was a great commentary for the photo JP.
Congrats steve that looked like you guys were pros, just don't tell anyone that was your first and know one will ever know.
