New with two nucs
« on: August 27, 2015, 07:33:09 am »
I just wanted to hello to everyone. My names Doug I'm new to beekeeping. Starting with two five frame nucs this weekend. I will be transfering to ten frame boxes. I live in brisbane Australia. The honey flow has just started here, so hope all goes well. Love to hear any tips, have enjoyed surfing this site. Plenty of great info. Thanks

Howdy, good to see another local. Seems you have the jump on me. I'm yet to assemble my boxes or find any bees. Every weekend I've been ready to go build stuff, it's be cold & cloudy, and I need to leave my stuff outside afte painting. So hopefully this weekend, althoug eith the rain (which we desperately need, so I don't want it to go yet) it's looking doubtful.

Watch out for Small Hive Beetles.
I'd put some Apithor baits in there just in case.

I'm out near Warwick. Moved from Brisbane 7 years ago to get out of the rat race. I didn't drive out of my driveway this morning, I skied in the mud!

Oh and as for SHB, I'm starting with perforated bottom boards in the hope it might help reduce any SHB issues. Between them, Nosema, and AFB, I'm hoping I can avoid them until I get established at least, but who knows.

I have setup one with a blue bee base, the other has the slide in the side trays to hopefully catch the beetle.

Both hives are doing well, will be adding my first super to one of the hive tomorrow as this box is now all drawn out. The other hive is a bit slower may wait another week or so. Very happy with the progress, I've had a few beetles in both hives. I have added a couple AJ traps on top of the frames, which have been working.
