use of equipment from dead hive (dysentery)
« on: June 17, 2005, 11:31:10 pm »
Is it okay to re-use boxes from a hive that died over the winter of dysentery?  If yes, i assume i should wash it down with something, clorox maybe?  If no, should i burn it?  how about the frames?  I hate to waste stuff...

If it was just dysentary that the hive suffered from, and nothing else, you can use it again.  No need to do anything special, the bees will clean it up.

The only problem I can think of with doing that is was it dysentry or nosema?

I've never done it, but I believe the "proper" treatment of equipment that is infected with Nosema is acetic acid fumigation.  You could probably wash it down with vinegar.

The issue is whether it was something they ate or Nosema.  Nosema is a spore forming protozoan called Nosema apis.

But the ROOT cause of Nosema is stress.

Thank you all.  I will wash it down with  white vinegar and let you know how it goes.
