Title: What are those things???
Post by: Jerrymac on September 26, 2008, 10:51:07 am
I just noticed this morning some symbols on the upper part of the page. If you look up there ^^^ you will see some weird looking things. What are they?

Jerry,

I knew I could count on you to be the first to notice :-D

They are social bookmarks -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking

We have installed the 7 "most popular" ones.  If someone has others they would like added just PM me.

You use them to post sites you like so others can find them.

That is for Delicious
(http://forum.beemaster.com/Themes/default/images/socialbookmarks/digg.png)
That is for digg. I actually read this site.
That is for furl.
That is for facebook. I have a profile there.
That is for Stumble Upon. I use this. They wa they are set up makes it fun because it can be random and highly addictive.
That is for reddit. I read reddit. It is like the everymans digg.
That is for slashdot. News for nerds. You bet I read /.

The idea is that interesting stories, pictures, and blogs get shared with other people.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

Ok, so how do you use them in a post? How do you insert them to use them? Do you link to them or do you create a link that they link to, they are weird lil things, how about some examples, KISS. Thanks,

You don't use them in a post. You click on them when you find something interesting so others can view it. If the article has already been submitted you increase it's popularity by clicking on it. If you are the first person to post it you can gain social status by having others show they like it. But note you can also have people who don't like it and they can down mark it. Thus taking away your social status.

Go to digg.com or reddit.com and look on the left side you will see a number next the story. The higher the number the more popular the story. Stumble Upon works a little differently. It adds a toolbar to the browser. On the left side is a button that says Stumble. You click it and it brings you to a page and you can if you choose click on a thumbs up or down icon. Or you just click stumble again and go to another page.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

Guys these symbols are getting way over my head. My kids are starting to talk like the text message so I don't understand them anymore (if I every really did).  I mean what does CUS BTW UOK mean?

They tell me it means See you soon, by the way, are you Okay?

Text speak is replacing Engrish, now what do I do?
