Rick, we call those Shaggy Mane up here, interesting how names vary from place to place, smiling.  have that great and most wonderful day, with health. Cindi

Cindi, that is exactly what I thought at first, but was not sure, and after a lot of reading and investigation found that these are NOT shaggymanes.  No inkyness, rounder.  Since I wasn't sure I made really really sure of what they are :)  They are definately shaggy parasols :).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaggy_parasol

I checked, double checked, triple checked, and possibly a fourth and fifth check, especially since there is a poisonous sortof lookalike.  And then started out first by only eating a little bit just in case.

Better than shaggymanes imho.....I did see some shaggymanes in the lawn at work and thought about getting them, but  with all the chemicals that go on lawns I decided to take a pass.

JP i don't think there are any Mushroom people on the forum or at least i haven't seen any Smurfs  :-D lol.  I'd stick to looking for Morels they are desintive from everything else no chance of getting posioned.  Besides there have been experts that have posioned themselves so be carefull please.
Take me to the land of milk and honey!!!

Natalie. Where do you buy your Morel spores from ? I ordered a batch years ago from some place in CA. and not a one ever grew. :'(
Danno How did you prepare the puffball mushroom ? I flowered and fried in a skillet of butter like I do the Morels and it was garbage. :-P

OH Gosh JP I just hate to add any negativity to your desire for hunting down the good mushrooms, but I was working in the emergency room back in the 1980's registering patients as they came in. One night a whole bunch of people started to flow in very sick telling us they were at a party where the host had gone out and picked some wild mushrooms.

All night long people were coming in from that party sick as dogs, we named them the mushroom people, as in - "we've got more mushroom people here, get the triage nurse fast""

Well some of the people ended up in critical condition, can't remember the details right now. But the host of the party came in and claimed that he knew exactly which mushrooms were the good ones and the bad ones.

So I never forgot that experience and I just am worried about you picking wild mushrooms. You see, even the experts make mistakes.

Sorry for raining on your parade, but this bothered me.
