Title: oops i just squished a queen cell
Post by: the-ecohouse.com on January 21, 2012, 03:16:14 am
hi guys

well i didn;t quite squish it just squashed it a little ( it was on the first frame i pulled out typical)

the hive is queenless but there is plenty of uncapped lava and first stage lava (and there were plenty of other superceedure cells, but this one was the primary, it was super large and absolutely perfect)

so whats likely to happen here? what are you experiences

do you think they will abort it?

It depends on how deformed it is and if the larvae is damaged.  If the larvae is damaged they will probably tear it down.

hopefully not to damaged....
just a slight push against another frame, but because it looks like she is/was a few days from emerging.
fingers crossed, as its one of the best queen cells ive seen

Another one will develop and take its place...

unfortunate, but a good reminder that you need to pull the outside frames first so that you can slide the others over....and not squish the queen cells  ;)

i it were my hive and i had others, i'd pop a frame of eggs/couple days old larvae just for added security.

nah i think it will be ok looks like they have not aborted it yet.. plus there's still plenty of late eggs and lava in the hive.

Congrats on the new queen....I sure hope she doesn't get "hopelessly lost" on her mating flights.  I seem to recall that you're in Australia and this is the "downunder" forum???  Adding your location to your profile will let folks know what climate your bees are living in...when they're quickly scanning the new posts or in other more general forums. ;)

Congratulations, Eco, you're no longer lost!!! ;)  Thanks, I don't always (thought I should) pay attention to what forum I'm in so your location will help.

Fantastic news on your queen!!!  Glad it worked out for you (and her).  I hope she makes you the largest crop of honey you've ever gotten from a colony!

Have you checked on that queen again Eco? Just wondering if she settled in and is laying well.

yep shes going gang busters

actually though another weird thing happened when i was marking some queens last weekend. One of them stopped in her tracks after being marked and stopped moving.

at which point i though great i just killed her somehow?

she stayed like that for 20 sec, so i placed her on-top of some frames and the bee pushed her down into the gaps.

about 5 min later i saw her walking up another frame i pulled the frame and she was going at it like nothing ever happened? Weird? right

You'd stop still if you were branded, Eco.

Nah, you ever watching a heafer stand still after they were branded??  I think what happened is typical "women stuff"....ain't you ever watched a lady paint her fingernails and then be very careful with them, holding them in front of them to be sure nothing touches them?....that's what that queen was doing, she wanted to give her thorax polish job a chance to dry before getting back to work. ;)
