Title: Hands off our Vegemite
Post by: SlickMick on November 05, 2009, 09:27:00 pm
It is hard to imagine but on a really Aussie subject ie Vegemite we have to be concerned that some uncaring US owner (Kraft) of this truly iconic Aussie tucker has tried to adulterate with other STUFF and then had the hide to try and flog the stuff off.

What a hide :-x

Now I dont think that there would be one dyed in the wool Aussie that wouldn't like Vegemite on toast, Vegemite sangers, Vegemite and butter pikelets and and and. I can't imagine all the ways I like Vegemite.. even Vegemite and honey! Dead set! Then I have even heard that there are some from the other side of the Pacific that have tried it and like it so much they are screaming at the US Gov to let them import it . Even like it better than Bourbon!! or their favourite sheila!! But! Hands off, it is ours and we need all we can get. Imagine if 200,000,000 yanks tried it and decided that they liked it so much, there'd be none left for us.

It is dirt mixed with salt.  Kids like it be cause kids like to eat dirt.  My nieces and nephews love it. (vegemite, and probably dirt too)
Which shows how bad things are down under.  :-P

At least that is what it tastes like to me.

The Brits have something similar - Marmite.

(i figure this will get to our aussie friends  )

Mmmmm, warm fresh baked bread with melty butter and vegemite. mmmm oh the memories!  I never did think the stuff I bought over here tasted the same as the stuff my friends had when I was traveling.  Leave it to our industrialized food machine to ruin another good thing.

oh, now my mouth is watering!

I have a liberal pallet and enjoy trying new food especially cuisine of other cultures.

Where would a common redneck from Georgia go about getting or making some authentic vegamite.  After a quick search I found that vegamite is a spread made from spent brewers yeast and spices.  I do have several friends that are home brewers so spent brewers yeast should be easy to come by.

Clear this up for us folk up top.

We have an Outback Steak house.  That's about it.

Do you have an American counter at your local store?  If so what do they sell at it?

I need to get out more.

Tell you what, if you send me a jar of vegimite I'll send you a jar of peanut butter.  Of course you probably already have that.  I know, pickled pigs feet.  I bet your store doesn't have that.  How about deep fried butter - betcha can't get that in Oz.  'Course that won't travel too good.  I'll think about this.

Found this on the web:

The main ingredients in Vegemite, as listed on the jar, are:

Yeast extract
salt
mineral salt
malt extract (from barley)
colour
flavours
niacin
riboflavin
thiamine
folate

It really sounds interesting to me. Will let you all know when I order it.

You're right about the ingredients Annette.. it is, as any good cook knows, the proportions that make the difference.. and of course the method.

By the way, Annette, I prefer the stuff that comes off the spent brewers yeast :cheer:

I have had to help my hubby get ready for a trip these past few days so everything in the world has been on hold. I have the flyer right here in front of me and I will go on line and figure it all out.  Hope the shipping isn't more than the product.  OH Well, I will do it anyway just to share a bit of the heaven with you dear Aussie folks.

I will let you know when it comes it. Could be a couple of weeks time.

LOL!  This string brought back lots of memories.  I was even thinking of pikelets today.  I served two years as a missionary in Oz.  A favorite (or "favourite" to my Aussie mates) trick to play on the greenies (new missionaries) was to set them up by taking them to a co-conspirator's house telling them beforehand that it is rude and socially unacceptable to Aussies not accept and appear to enjoy food offered to them.  Next our Aussie mate would offer them a heaping teaspoon of "chocolate spread" (it does kind of look like Nutella)--heh-heh-heh...  After the victim chokes on an overdose of Vegemite, we'd further torture him by giving him a big glass of cordial--STRAIGHT to wash it down!  For all you other Yanks, cordial is a drink concentrated to a syrup that is mixed about 10/1 with water.  By the way, Mick, ever tried feeding it to the bees?  If any of youse (Aussie plural of you) are thinking of trying it, let me warn you, it is strong stuff.  A TINY bit spread on buttered toast is quite nice (once you acquire the taste).  Use too much and it will cure you from ever wanting another taste.  Think about what eating a beef boullion cube is like and you're close to what a big dose of Vegemite tastes like.  I heard an Aussie joke about Vegemite:  "if you spread it on a road, it's called "bitumen".  If you spread it on runways, it's called "tarmac".  If you spread it on toast, it's called Vegemite!" ;)

ok, for you hardcore vegemite peoples, i have a receipe for you 2 try, do exactly as i say, now, get 2 peices of white bread only, a rip them into small peices, then get 1 table spoon of vegemite and 1 table spoon of butter and put on the top of your ripped up bread, now, boil the kettle, and pour in enough water until your bread starts to rise, after you have done this, stir the entire soupy contents around and then add a heavy amount of cracked black pepper on top, this is what our family calls vegemite soup,, and it looks a bit like spew and tastes similar, but if you like vegemite, its pretty darn nice, and easy to get addicted, this first taste is always a bit weird, but then youll wanna try just one more spoon full, then just one more and b4 you know it, its all gone, mmmmm, mmmm, yummy :P

I think the name lasted nearly a week before Kraft decided to change it again after printing zillions of labels.  Has anyone actually tasted this stuff?  I can't actually understand how vegemite can be improved upon or altered.

Nettie, we have a tradition here - no, a mandate, and it WILL be enforced - to gaily sing the vegemite ditty before tucking into our toast.  Here it is for your edification and study, so you are prepared for when the gleaming black gold arrives.

I remember that song from a music book from about the 2nd 0r 3rd grade..
It went like this:

Ol' Tante Koba she is so old,
She stirs her coffee with her own big toe!"....(Thats all I remember)

I just started reading this post and ask my Daughter if she tried Vegemite when she was down under and she said yes everyone tried it and it was Horrible, she couldn't believe someone would eat it on purpose  then she showed me this video of a girl trying it and said this was the most common reaction when she was trying it. Common newbie mistake there. Especially if you haven't had it before, you have to spread it on VERY VERY THIN. As in just a tiny amount.
I remember watching the Today Show when they did a broadcast of the Americas Cup in Western Australia in the late eighties, and Willard Scott decided to sample some Vegemite. I watched in complete horror as he spread it on a slice of bread like peanut butter. He must have put a whole tablespoon on there, if not more. The look on his face was priceless, poor guy! It's like a beautiful rare spice, you just use a little, it's not a bland filling like processed cheese that you scoop on. Sorry to labour the point, us Aussies are passionate about Vegemite! I am very impressed that some of you guys are going to give it a go  :-D :-D

Vegemite is our staple diet!  It's like rice is to the Philippines - we don't feel satiated till we've had a big bowl of it twice a day.  Our other staple diet is of course staples, but I'll leave that for a new topic.  I think Nettie and Barra will love it.

OK guys, I received it and I tried it. I think I made the mistake of also putting a bit to much on my bagel, (did not have white bread in the house) but I really did not like it!!!

I am going to give it another try, with white bread and very little on this time.

It smells sort of cheesy and yes like a beef buillon cube. Actually wonder if soup can be made out of this.

Anyway, will give it another try, but if I don't like it, can I still come to Australia??

Hello Nettie,

We are all excited for you.  Perhaps you would prefer it on white toast instead of bread. Try buttering the bread or toast first, and yes, spread it thinly the first couple of times.  You could try it in a salad sandwich too.  You can make a hot drink by adding hot water to a lump of vegemite in a cup.  It's a bit like bonox.
Here's a recipe for soup using vegemite:
http://www.vegemite.com.au/vegemite/page?siteid=vegemite-prd&locale=auen1&PagecRef=568 (http://www.vegemite.com.au/vegemite/page?siteid=vegemite-prd&locale=auen1&PagecRef=568)

You can still come to Australia because you like honey.

Annette,

I and most people I know generally have vegemite this way:
1. On toast not bread (tastes much stronger on bread)
2. With butter - for god sake if you're new to vegemite butter the toast!!! (without butter tastes stronger and not as good)
3. Spread VERY thinly - you should still be able to see parts of buttered toast that aren't covered in vegemite that's how thin it needs to be.

I hope your 2nd try of vegemite is more pleasant  8-)

Some Aussies have it a lot thicker, a few have it a bit thinner than this. But for Annette, I suggest you go with this kind of strength or less and see how you go. Note the butter - don't be shy with the butter now, it all adds to the experience!

Isn't it some kind of yeast by-product?  Did I miss something?  What is the health benefit of this stuff?  Clarify, elaborate.  Cindi

Hi Cindi,
Vegemite is a beer brewing by-product:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite)

It helps us Aussies shear sheep, grow hair on our chest, wrestle crocodiles and generally be good blokes!
In my case it helps me push a pen around a desk and type reports all day. Doh!

OK what is a malt sandwich?? I think you are going to have to send me a package like that girl received in that video.  By the way that video was precious - very very funny!!

I'm not ready yet to try it a second time.  Due to this cold I have now, I have lost all my taste buds.  Will have to wait a while.  Will let you all know when I try it again.

I'm about ready to go for it.  My buddy handed me a big plastic tub of spent brewers yeast for my homemade vegemite project.  The only recipe I could find so far was this one:

Home-made Vegemite
1 dessertspoon celery salt
2 teaspoons tomato juice
2 teaspoons onion juice
125g compressed yeast
parisian essence to colour

Mince yeast and place in a saucepan, add remaining ingredients. Bring gently to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour into small jars and seal.

If anyone finds a recipe that is more authentic or sound more interesting forward it on.  I'm hoping to whip up some of this gnarly concoction this weekend.

Mason I am full of admiration but also fear about your project. If you pull this off you'll probably make the newspapers in Australia - it's probably more impressive to an Aussie than wrestling a croc or being stung by a jellyfish!

Best of luck,
John.

@ Mason - vegemite is quite thick, thicker than peanut butter, it's more like . . . sticky frosting??, thinned out propolis??.  I can't see how reducing it for 15 minutes is going to get the right consistancy.  But good luck and let us know how it goes! I"ve never even considered trying to make my own lol. Verry interesting.

Ziffa, I hate to mention this, but if you really want to describe vegemite..it is the consistency and colour of meconium.  I wouldn't know if it tastes the same, though.

Mason, like all aussies, I didn't know it was possible to manufacture the magical stuff at home!  I am waiting with baited breath for the result.  Have you tried the original to compare it with?

Title: Re: Hands off our Vegemite
Post by: SlickMick on December 05, 2009, 03:54:13 am
I think LoneStar (Star for short) that the thread has become quite convoluted. Here we have JohnnyBarra (Barra for short but not for long) eating cases of the stuff and either loving it or trying to be an Ossie. Then we have Annette whom we call Nette who has to send her daughter in to try the stuff cause she cant stand the smell. Gawdamit the smell has nothing to do with liking it. Vegemite is meant to be eaten.. didja get that Nette? Ya gotta eat the stuff, not go stuffing around and sniffing it.. ya know its not cocaine so ya dont have to sniff.. just eat, then you'll get your highs.

I have to say I'm impressed with Barra, Star, although his weight gain is a bit of a concern.. I wonder how many cases he bought and does he not want to waste his money?

Now I am impressed with Mason's attempt to make the dinkydi stuff. I hope he fails cause the yanks have too much of our iconic eaties anyhow.. BUT if he succeeds I want some shares in the company he floats. He'd be sure to get the OA (Order of Aus since they did away with the sir thing)

Now Cindi (Chookie in Strine) doesn't want to learn Strine and seems to be afraid to try the Black Stuff. Have no fear Chookie, millions of Aussies grew up eating the stuff and singing the jingle on their way to school along with the Aeroplane Jelly jingle and the Sorbent jingle... ie  What's the gentlest tissue in the bathroom you can issue, why its Sorbent Sorbent safest for sure.

Now I hope Star that I've sorted out how you are thinking about this thread. It is a really important one cause those in the US except for Barra seem to think there's something wrong with our eating habits and our cuisine.

There ya go

Good grief, Slicko.  I had vague recollections of the very first post, something along the lines of "Hands off our Vegemite".  I know a lot has happened since then, and it has been buried in the mists of countless crates of fresh vegemite and poor gagging americans, but do you remember at all, many months ago, who actually had their hands on our vegemite and what they are doing to it?  I think I read somewhere about combining the real deal with <choke> cheese, in the hopes of finding a stateside market.  Is that what they have done to it?  I realise that the nameless previously dubbed i snack 2.0 has something of this combination; will this goop be the only pseudo vegemite available outside of Australia??  And has anyone actually eaten it and lived to tell about the experience??  And did we sell Kraft to America? Maybe Dick Smith will borrow Mas's recipe and have an Australian made and owned vegemite, although he will have to mimic it and call it vegetite or something for copyright reasons.  And the greatest mystery of all: Did Barra name his boat Barra yet?

Nettie dear, I think you have missed one very vital point.  Vegemite has many many health benefits, and you too will be sure to grow at least half a metre in height and probably grow hair on your chest.  Look at Barra as a shining example, how healthy and robust he has become.  If you carefully examine the label on your little jar, you will see it contains folate.  As everyone knows, this is good for pregnancy.  In short, if you don't have any children now, you soon will have.  Keep eating it  :)

Tricky Dicky did do a version called "Aussiemite" a few years ago, but I havn't seen it around for a while. I seem to remember him being interviewed on the radio around that time saying they were still trying to perfect the recipe.

As to the cheese mix, my two older kids like it.

In my opinion, if all companies can do is try to mimic other products, even down to having a yellow and red label for mock vegemite, then it is inevitable they are destined for endless legal battles (and lack of consumer support).  I did contact Dick Smith a little while ago with my suggestions for improving their company, and did receive a nice reply.

Phil, it looks like Kraft is now an independently owned company, whatever that means, so you might not have to go on strike just yet.
I'll send you a copy of our Dick Smith Foods correspondence privately.  They also sent me a product list, which mainly includes 5 kinds of peanut butter (also Kraft imitations), and the odd biscuit or cream cheese.  I suppose we have too high expectations on a company with Dick Smith in its name, but I reckon that even on a small scale, more can be done to utilize local australian produce other than peanuts, cereal, and the odd berry for the Bush Foods Breakfast Cereal.  A whole citrus orchard was cut down here because they couldn't get rid of the fruit.  A lot of our best produce goes overseas, and for some reason, we import the same kinds of fruits and vegetables we grow here.  I will say though that they are to be commended assuming they are using Australian packaging and plastics, and still keeping the price to the level of companies using plastics made in cheap labour countries.

This reminds me the irish joke when Molly comes home in distress and her father asks her what is wrong; whatever it is, they can work it out.  So Molly says, "Fither, it is a terrible thing to tell you, but I'm pregnant".  Her father looks stunned for a moment, "Oh, that is not so good, Molly dear", then he says, "Well and are you sure that it's yours?"

Lone,

Thanks for sending the letter. I think DS said in an interview a couple of years back, it was when I think another biscuit factory was closing down here in Melb and people were trying to get him to buy it up and keep it going, that he is not in the business of manufacturing, just in marketing. He contracts other (Aussie) companies to do the manufacturing.

It is not an attitude I am comfortable with personally and I would like to see a bit more innovation too.

BLOODY BURSTING WITH GOODNESS!

Now butter!

Butter means a product derived exclusively from milk and products obtained from
milk, principally in the form of an emulsion of the type water-in-oil.
2 Composition of butter
(1) Butter must contain no less than 80.0% m/m milkfat.
(2) Butter may contain –
(a) water; and
(b) salt; and
(c) lactic acid producing micro-organisms; and
(d) flavour producing micro-organisms

Now you take ya Salada, put 3mm of butter on it, add 2mm vegemite, stick in freezer for 5 minutes to set, and voila, best fun you can have with clothes on. You can put butter and vegemite between two Saladas, or Saos, squeeze and make worms!

Now Micko dont go on with all that bullsjpt about what's in a salada just tell him what he needs to know. Vegemite is good with almost everything.

Now JP, for a vegemite sanger (sandwich) yoitu need a couplea slices of white bread, some butter andacourse vegemite. Ya dont want the butter to soak intathebread so its gotta be kinda stiff but not real stiff that ya cant spread it without tearing the bread apart. Gotit?

Then ya take a bit of vegie and spread it real thin over the butter, ya gotta see the butter through the vegie and also sometimes see only the vegemite

Then

Ya eat it.............................. yummo

In a Salada is:

Proximates

If a salada contains all that, I'd say cardboard would be just as nutitious.  By the way, they feed the goldfish on saladas here every second day.  They had some that were 16 to 20 years old.

Do I have to eat it on white bread though, cause I stopped buying white bread, got a favorite multi grain bread I buy, will that work?

Hey JP!
I like it on a saltine too!
Ok,.....It tastes like....Thick soy sauce sort of....When you smell it, it smells familiar....Like an old dark beer..Its salty, but in a different sort of salty way.
My wife thinks its nasty...She thinks its just something that the ozzies use to tell Yanks to eat, then they laff at us!
I dont agree....For me, I was warned to take it lite...and I did....I HAD TO taste it several times before I could make up my mind..Its genuinely all its own!!!..Nothing like it!..When you spread it on a ritz, It looks like when you butter a toast and then spread cinnamon on it..Its dark! Like cake frosting!
Actually, I think youre gonna like it..Its strange, but good...Not spicy...Not too salty...Not too malty either...As for me, I can really slather it on a cracker now!..I havent tried it on buttered toast yet, But I'm sure I will!
Oh yeh....No aftertaste either..Thats why I think I had to try it several times(a sleeve of Ritz) till I could actually have the flavor in my mouth long enuff to decide what I thot!
I would eat it constantly, but a case cost 60.00 with freight..And the jars are about the size of the jars that boulion cubes come in!
Sooo,...Get it and spread it!...Then, give us a full report!

your friend,
Barra! :-D

OK guys. I was without internet service since Monday due to no electricity. We had a snow storm to end all snow storms and we never get that sort of weather here.  Anyway have been sitting in the dark at night with just candles since Monday. I finally got dug out of my driveway and drove down the hill to the nearest Starbuck's to get onto the internet. They charged me 4.00 for 2 hours of internet service. So now I am sitting here and catching up on the internet.

I did try the vegemite again this week and all I can say is, I can't understand this stuff. It really tastes bad to me. Sorry guys but I love you all anyway even though you eat this stuff, must be something you have to start eating as a baby or something??

So JP trust me, you would not like this at all. You know that John isn't in his right mind and he probably doesn't even know what he is eating at the moment. Do not go there at all.

Sorry guys but very strange food indeed.

That's the reason we advise putting lots of butter under the vegemite, Sca-bees.  It can also help with having low cholesterol.

Now, I think it is partly a blokey thing to eat salty foods.  That would be why Barra took to it like a duck to slugs, and sheilas like me and Nettie, well, we have to be reared on the stuff, preferably starting before we are weaned.

That is why Tim Tams were invented.  For sheilas.  (who get choccy cravings, rather than salty cravings)

Here is another place to buy genuine aussie things over yonder.  http://about-australia-shop.com/product_info.php/products_id/387 (http://about-australia-shop.com/product_info.php/products_id/387)
If you haven't had a tim tam slam, you are missing out on an experience not to be missed.  I can just see Nettie getting on her brolly and whizzing down to procure her very first Tim Tam.  But you can't have just one.  You'll have to get a crate, Nettie.

Well, I was mostly referring to my lack of knowledge as far as what a "Tim-tam" is, but I did make the chocolate connection. ;)
<edit> Wait a minute...I just found out that a "Tim Tam" is just a "Kit Kat"!!!  Boy, that's original..somebody ripped off our naming convention and just changed 2 letters!!!
<edit2> Doh! just found out that Kit Kat was actually originally british!  Typical arrogant american assumption to think that it was ours!! ;)

My nephew and nieces eat plenty of vegemite...yes Annette, it is something you have to break your teeth on!  My sister don't like it but she feeds it to her kids for my brother-in-law's sake :)

Look, I have to break in here. I don't think that kit kats and tim tams are very much alike. Yes, they are both a biscuit covered in chocolate, but the taste is very different.

The Tim Tam has a much more potent chocolate hit to it than the Kit Kat does. From the taste, the Kit Kat has almost no cocoa to the mixture. You have to try the Tim Tam.

Now to really throw the salt amongst the pidgeons...Salt hit? Anchovies on the capricossa. Yum!

Nettie, I love vegemite, but I was brought up on it.  Or maybe I have the gene.  When your mother packs your lunchbox with either vegemite sangers or stale peanut butter sangers for years when at school, you also don't have a choice.
I would love to post you a box of tim tams, but it's over 40 C here (106 F) and they wouldn't even make it as far as the postoffice without turning to mush.  You would be better off trying one of those aussie goods suppliers, such as About Australia, or  http://www.aussieproducts.com/timtam.asp (http://www.aussieproducts.com/timtam.asp)  or  http://www.aussiefoodshop.com/australian_food_biscuits.html (http://www.aussiefoodshop.com/australian_food_biscuits.html)    or   http://www.greataussiefood.com.au/listProduct/Food/Biscuits+-+Sweet//25 (http://www.greataussiefood.com.au/listProduct/Food/Biscuits+-+Sweet//25)

Scabees, I was surprised to see that tim tams are named after an american horse, and yet you cannot even buy them there.

Phil, what is capricossa? Whatever it is, you could always spread vegemite on the anchovies.

Yinnar, it's good that you found the original version of True Blue.  John Williamson redid it, leaving vegemite out of it, probably in view of who owns kraft.  I don't know why there are pictures of coloured parrots when he's singing about cockatoos though.  You will have to find Nettie a pet kangaroo to take home with her.

Well,

I located an Australian bakery in Marietta GA that sells Vegemite.  They have extended business hours every Tuesday so last night I made my way up to their location.  I soon realized that the extended hours are primarily for the local blue grass musicians to congregate and jam.  There was about 20 people picking and grinning and I took a few minutes to enjoy the local sounds,  purchased two small jars of Vegemite and made my way home.

I didn't have any bread so pulled out some crackers and butter and went in for my first taste.  That is some malty tasting stuff.  It must have been invented by a monk because it goes great with dark beer.  The taste was so surprising it took me a few crackers of the stuff to get into it.  Fortunately I liked it because I had no idea that the taste was going to be with me for hours.  In fact the taste continued to repeat throughout the night.  It really sticks with you.

I would not put it on the same level as AC/DC but never the less certainly a great contribution from the Aussies.  The other jar will be a stocking stuffer for my brother.

Mase, I've heard of the Australian Bakery Cafe.  They talk about it on the bluegrass show I listen to.  I think they came from Bendigo in Victoria, where one of the bluegrass DJs is.  He spent hours there when he visited GA.

Doug, you should be able to order vegemite from any one of those links I found above, or visit any grocery store in Australia.  Or visit the aussie bakery cafe.  But if you do, you'll just have to try the lammies as well.

My brother got his Vegemite for Christmas this year and I am very disappointed to report his reaction.  He actually asked me if you could use it to pack trailer bearings.  I was really surprised he did not care for it in the least.  Here was his response:

Quote
OK…here is my review.

I found myself excited to get Vegemite in my Christmas stocking.  After all…things from Australia are cool.  I like to be cool.  I envisioned myself sitting in a corporate meeting over lunch and pulling out my Vegemite sandwich in the middle of an inquisitive crowd.  When questioned…I would casually inform them that I had a Vegemite sandwich…you know…like in the song.

I was told…toast, butter and then a thin (less is more) layer of the pungent butter.  (Yeast…hmmmm.  Beer has yeast.)  So that is what I did this morning.  Fresh toast, butter and just enough Vegemite to where I could still see the bread beneath it.  It smells like beef bouillon…kinda sweet and beefy.  So I took my first bite and quite honestly…it was waste of a perfectly good piece of toast.

You guys have to be kidding me.  There was no sweet, no beef but only  bitter.  And plenty of it.  Maybe it would work better in some kind of Gin cocktail????  I was disappointed.  Less so that it tasted like the bottom of my shoe but more that I didn’t connect with the Aussie vibe.  I mean I had the most fun in my life with a bunch of Aussies in Orlando at an international sales meeting.  I dig ya’ll.  And I’m no stranger to weird foods…I’m an Italian from New Orleans.  Had turtle, alligator, blood sausage, rattle snake, boudin, grits, caribou, buffalo, head cheese, etc.

I now live in fear that I may also not be cut out for a “walkabout”, or wallaby stew or that even a Fosters might now somehow not work.  Oh well…it was just one piece of toast wasted huh?

You need to ship over some boudin to those boys!

Well, Mason, that is such a huge disappointment for you.. I can't imagine what it must feel like to have your own flesh and blood reject the good old vegemite toast, but I suppose being an Italian from New Orleans was not the ideal starting point.

But don't let that hold you back.. it takes all kinds to make the world and in some cases, a family

All I can say to Michael is...all the more for us!

Yes, if he were Australian, he would have brought shame to his entire family, town, state, and country, not to mention planet, but the fact that he is a New Orleans Italian will probably let him off having any convictions in an Australian Law Court. Use of vegemite to grease bearings is banned in most regions, however.  But the worst of it for Michael is that he just ain't cool   8-)
(Has he considered taking the vegemite sandwich into the meetings and holding globs of it inside his cheeks till the meeting is finished so he can at least pretend to be cool?)

Anyway, Nette, you have another member in your club.

I just noticed that Michael works in marketing?

Maybe he can use his skills to market vegemite to the USA?

It might be a challenge, given his personal views, but this would be a professional arrangement  :)

Easy day at home with the kids after camping with friends over Easter, accidentally came across this thread. Very funny, very australian with good "cross the pond humor".
Well done slick mick and others. I think it's the most read thread in this down under part of the forum and no mention of bees and the world around them.

Good heavens HK it's hard to believe that the good old Vegemite thread rears its head again after all these years. I must admit we have a ton of fun at the time.

I see that over time there are some of us who have stuck around whilst others appear to have gone AWOL.

I see that JP is still learning his cutouts but we still have to learn about his Vegemite sanger. Annette still comes on board but minus Vegemite.. Lone from north Qld is still active while Mason has been out of it for a while. Pity because I believe that he became addicted to good old Vegemite, buying it by the case. Hiya Cathyp.

Of course there were many others who contributed to the humour of the thread.

But for now I would like to ask JP did he eventually get around to eating his Vegemite sandwich?

And for those of you who don't know, Vegemite is like mother's milk to Aussies and that ex-pats can't believe that it's not universal. Of course at ex-pat meetings everyone has to sing the Vegemite jingle before any business is done. And, if any of you are going to Rio for the Olympics you might be able to beg borrow or steal some Vegemite from the Aussie team because they've got a container load going down just to keep them in shape and to give them a head start in all the events.

Moved 80 hives yesterday, then when I got to the destination had to work through 90, all  before the 6 hour drive home.all up 900kms and a 20 hour day.
This morning is "beekeepers breakfast".two pieces of toast with Vegemite under baked beans, topped with two eggs. High protein lots of good nutrients, stops the body aching. It's our regular during pollination season.  Oh and some coffee.
That's my favorite Vegemite recipe. What's yours ......anyone.

So first problem, getting into the house. DONE

Second problem, training the kids to love it. DONE and DONE

Third problem, making her make sangers for the kids, DONE

My entertainment at her expense when we eat it, great!

Do we leave the lid off the jar, as much as possible.

When we camp out for a few days. One of the favorite meals for the camp is "Vegemite basted rabbit"  cooked in the camp oven we will use Vegemite to bast or butter all over the rabbit, add some juice in the way of whatever we have a can of soup or baked beans.  This provides enough moisture that the rabbit often needs.  The vegie gives that nice bit of added bush, spray the lid of the camp oven with eucalyptus spray and the "aussie bush" effect is complete.
If your short of some stock or juice another method is to butter bread then add the Vegemite to your liking on the bread. Then rap the bread around the rabbit pieces then rap it in foil. Put the foiled rabbit into the camp oven over some hot coals and put hot coals on the lid as well.  The bread rap stops the rabbit  from burning on the base of the camp oven. Check it in half an hour and you can figure the rest out from there. Even better with some stout.

Enjoy that next time you or under the stars for the night. Bee good.

Vegemite? Disgusting stuff.

Australians are pretty naive thinking they can persuade the Rest of The World to like Vegemite; it's a bit like Moroccans trying to promote roasted sheeps eyes as the next big thing in the kitchen.

Vegemite? Disgusting stuff.

Suggest you try Marmite (it's the REAL thing ).  I could happily live on that stuff, if only it wasn't so expensive.

One reason the 'colonials' don't like it, is that most have never tasted real Marmite !  The antipodean variety which carries that name is a totally different formulation.  See Wiki for the history ...

Just love your Fosters, but Vegemite ain't for me.  Maybe it's been designed for a sunnier climate ?

How is this all for timing. A street in Melbourne was renamed "Vegemite way", today.
Cook street in port melbourne, just near the Vegemite head office is now Vegemite way in honour of its 93 year history and ..........we'll I think we all know the rest.

Anyone on this forum have any interest in beekeeping? Since this thread restarted not one new thread. How australian are we all.

Ok - some beekeeping ....

Although my earlier post was a bit 'tongue in cheek' - I'm being serious with this:

bees love anything salty ... and Vegemite is nothing if not salty (as is Marmite, but let's not go there) ... so - has anyone ever tried lacing sugar syrup or fondant with Vegemite ?

It might even result in Vegemite-flavoured honey ...

Well - for once, I'm ahead of you guys ...

Having made the suggestion ... I figured why not try it out myself (without letting those kangeroo-wrestlers in on it  - didn't know then that you'd been planning the same thing).
So - about 2 hrs ago I put a blob of Marmite (yeah, I know - but that's all I've got) about the size of my pinky's top-joint on a top bar underneath an empty jar feeder.

I've just checked, and that top-bar is now as clean as a proverbial whistle.  And that's the neat stuff !  To be honest I thought it'd be too salty for 'em - but no - they love it.

Dunno where to go from here with this one - be interesting to see how they get on with Vegemite - there might be a Nobel Prize going if it produces a super-bee which feeds on Varroa mites.

Makes sense 25% protein. That  puts it up there with the better pollens. It's a yeast extract, and lots of bee feeds (commercial and home made) use yeast of some description. It's just the cost that would seriously put it out of contention.

Righto. Mention vegemite and you have us swarming to it like bees to honey.
Honeycomb king, it seems like you are wondering what vegemite has to do with beekeeping.  Quite a bit.  I had heard it said many times, "Honey is the only food to never go off, it was found in Tutankhamun's tomb" etc.  So of course I thought about vegemite and realised I have never seen vegemite go stale.  I have seen old jars well past the use by date that contain black gold that is still as scrumptious and delicious as the day its yeast waste product was bottled.  I cleaned a jackaroo's humpy one time and found about 8 half-full catering tubs of vegemite and a dead rat.  So three years ago I decided to test the theory that honey is the only food to last forever, and sent an enquiry to Kraft.  Below is the response I received.

"Thank you for contacting Kraft Foods with your inquiry.

Vegemite may mould given the right conditions (eg the amount of moisture in the product due to supply chain temperatures).   Interestingly, consumers from QLD and northern NSW sometimes report to us that their Vegemite has started to mould whereas we rarely receive complaints from consumers in other States.

If we can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to contact our Consumer Advisory Team on freecall 1800 033 275."

So then we need to find out if honey in QLD or Northern NSW ever develops mould on top for a comparison.  If anyone in these areas has had this experience, please reply with full details such as location, time of year, your honey's refractive index, and whether there have been any water pistol fights in the extraction shed.

On another bee-related theme, Honeycomb king, Kinglake was where my father kept his hives when I was young before the neighbours complained.

Hey - I've just thought of vegemite-infused honey - wow, I'll have sweet dreams tonight.  My two favourite things.

Any rain down there this year, Slicko?

I've never had the opportunity to try vegemite, but it sounds like it may be right up there with buttermilk. Loved by the initiated, despised by the newcomer.

Hey lone. When your neighbours complain about your bees you didn't have to move them all the way to Queensland.
It's a great base here for beekeeping, too cold for keeping hives here most of the year, but the low humidity and temperature keeps shb and wax moth under control in stored boxes, honey, stickies etc. And it's central to most victorian bee sites. We got our first crop of messmate honey this year too since the fires (2009)
In my camp box I've got a jar of Vegemite and a reserve back up tube. The tube is that "in case of emergency" spare, you know if I'm stuck out bush or its been a bumpy road and the jar smashed. The used by date on the tube is, no change that the best before date is nov13. It's fine, a bit hard to squeeze out of the tube but taste fine. Yep this bushman will never die outback, living on Vegemite and whichygrubs.

G'day Idee, I'm surprised Geoff didn't take orders for vegemite and lemon scented pink flowering gum while he was over there at Bud's.  I guess we all like it because it was cheap and all our parents could afford.

Honeycomb King, there weren't any SHB when my father had bees.  There was a lot of broom on the block, bracken and pine trees.
