Where is the money coming from?
« on: October 29, 2009, 09:35:07 am »
Over the years, I know several states have had state funds to promote beekeeping. Whether it is buying the hives, packages, etc.

So where did that money come from? Was it state agriculture allotted funds, grants, federal assistant type monies? Was it tax based or private? I don't need the details, just the source of how this money came about.

Thank you.

I searched, but couldn't find, so I will try to go by memory, which may or may not be accurate.

In NC, the state gave away 500 hives, two each to 250 first time beeks. I think it was funded by a matched grant from Mt. Olive pickle Co., where the taxpayer paid an equal share with Mt. Olive.

PS. If anyone knows this to be inaccurate, please post.

We have a similar program in Mississippi throught the Dept of Agriculture...they will cover half the cost of either two or four hives fully outfitted, but there is a long waiting list. You may try different beek associations. Our contact is:

In Tennessee, I think it is state money.  To qualify you have to have at least 5 hives and attend one of the Bee Master Seminars ($100.00) under Dr. Skinner of the University of Tennessee Ag Extension.  The state did offer to give our club two hives to give to new bee keepers and to provide a mentor for a year to help them get started.  I think our club sloughed it off.  I didn't hear of anyone getting the new hives.
