Title: Our first ever Honey harvest
Post by: Pete on February 16, 2010, 08:18:39 pm
Well, we pulled out the 8 ideal frames at weekend and started getting ready for extraction.

I built an extractor (http://forum.beemaster.com/index.php/topic,26611.0.html) and started the steep learning curve of honey extraction. No pics of my extractor in action... :( Next time.

First lesson i learned was "slower is better" or your frame will blow out and your comb and honey will be stuck to the wall of your extractor.

Second lesson i learned was get all of your containers and stuff ready before you start.

Third lesson, if you shed is near your hive keep the windows closed or lots of bees will come in search of honey.

Fourth, not everything is enhanced in equal amounts by consumption of beer. Some activities require less beer; eg driving and extracting honey.

Fifth, half a dozen kids in your shed going through the pile of broken comb leads to honey all over your shed.

Sixth, bee keeping is awesome fun, a great fascination and you are well rewarded with loads of amazing honey.

Some pics for your enjoyment  :-D
