Frame Type
« on: January 16, 2011, 03:53:44 pm »
last time i got frames i bought wedge type top bar grooved bottom bar thinking i can use any type foundation plastic , crimped wire , medium brood , or starter strips ,

now i want to try some foundation less i read on Michael Bush's site about using popsicle sticks also about turning wedge down and nailing in place

so the question is do i take out wedge and put popsicle sticks in then put wedge back like regular foundation  or just turn wedge down if anyone has tried either i would like to know also if you have some pics that would be great

Thanks
Dave

Both ways will work.   I think putting the stick where the foundation goes may be best for even comb.

No pics, but all I did was break out the wedge, turn it, and nail it back in. My best advice is to put your foundationless frame in between two drawn frames in the brood chamber. If not, the bees will draw it out good and fat interfering with frame inspections. Trust me on this one-learn from my mistakes  :-D

Give them starter strips of wax foundation.  Cut 1/2 inch strip of wax foundation and nail it in there.   There ain't much sticking down, but it is great to give them a guide.

Either will work fine.  I'd just turn the wedge...
