Title: Uploading Smart Phone pics
Post by: skflyfish on March 14, 2011, 08:03:04 pm
There is a bit of a security risk when one uploads pics taken by a smart phone, like the iPhone or Android, or more rarely, from GPS enabled cameras.

You can watch a video about it here (http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/video?id=7621105).

I use Google Chrome browser and by installing the EXIF addon, which is available for most major browsers, I was able to see from JP's pics of his first swarm, a Google map of the location. I was also able to see where AllenF's Jabba the Snowman was made and Bix's frame anomaly was taken. All with addresses and some with street view. Among the multitude of metadata that smart phones store in the pic, is the latitude, longitude, altitude and compass direction of the pic.

Take a pic of your secret apiary with a smart phone and upload it to the web, and it isn't a secret anymore.

I believe the safest tact is to download a EXIF editor and edit the lat and long out of your smart phone pics before you upload them to the web.

3.85mm F2.8
1/15 ISO 200

Quicktime 7.6.6

BUT

Not GPS data!!

Good job.

What did you do to eliminate it?

Cool.   The only thing I could pull from that pic was that JP was going to be up half the night working with those bees.

You can now specifically turn off the location services for the camera there.  At least on my iPhone 3g with the latest OS installed.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out how to do that on my Droid.  Anyone?

Unless your digital camera is GPS enabled, which is not the norm, then you should have any issues.

Doesn't anybody have a BlackBerry anymore??  Easy as pie to turn off on my BB Storm.  Keep it turned off unless i'm lost and trying to use the maps feature.
