Your anti virus program should remove it. I use McAfee.

I got rid of all my malware by using Linux.  Haven't had any since.

If you insist on using windows though,  I would save my money and not pay McAfee or Norton , instead , try Avast Antivirus. It is free download for home users and for a free registration, you can download a legit registration # that is good for two years of updates and upgrades.

In every Win machine I have used Avast on, it works as well if not better than the paid services out there.

While I personally do not have Win installed on my home computers, I do work with it still at the school I am IT admin for.  Can't totally eliminate it so have to make sure to stay up on it.

Linux would be a way to go. The free version of Avast will work to an extent but it doesn't come with a firewall. Can I ask what you used and suggest for a free firewall?

the default Windows firewall is known round the globe as one of the worst ever made.  Not just bashing here.   I always disable it and use one of my own choosing.

NOD32 works well for me.

FYI, Norton is a virus within itself,  ask anyone who has tried to remove it

I use Malwarebytes, its free and works good for me. I agree with Robo about Notron. I use to use it and did not like it at all. I also found it will try to keep other antivirus and malware programs from running on the same computer.

Norton is a buggar with all its pop-up warnings and hoops it makes you jump through.  I hate it also and will never use it again.  But when installed and configured correctly it does a great job of protecting a computer.

I agree with previous posters re Norton, it's a great product for tech support people as there is a lot of work in removing broken Nortons!

A reputable free one off anti virus and malware scanner is here:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

I haven't used Malwarebytes but have heard good reports.

I installed linux on an old comp, but I have no idea how to use it - Ive been able to load windows programs with WINE; but I'm a long ways off from being comfortable with it. (If I could get online with the linux computer, I'd save the windows unit for school.)

What version of Linux is it you have that doesn't offer a browser or a connection manager?

I'd be glad to help you out there.

BTW, this really should be a new thread for your post,

I have Arklinux, I was considering trying several versions to see how they go, mint looks interesting and ubuntu (sp?) is supposed to be a good starter; I wouldn't be shy about adding them all. It's an old laptop- which I connected directly to the ethernet hub. I didn't get a protocol's helper (I wouldn't be sure how to run it anyway) and the K(something) browser didnt surf. if you want to recommend a more user friendly version, I'll take the suggestion.

To remove norton completely, you have to download a special removal tool from norton.

How much do they charge for help.

How much do they charge for help.

They do not charge anything, only ask that you search for an answer in their forum before asking a question, and most of the time this search will give you the info you need to solve your problem. It is a very busy forum, with a lot of very knowledgeable tecci's on it. Like most forums they do solicit donations, but very mildly. with a donation to the cost of supporting the forum, they will delete the advertising that actually does not bother me, knowing that there is a lot of expense, and time involved in supporting a real busy forum. The techguys forum has helped me a lot over the years, saved me service calls and their cost, and in the past I have contributed to them. I am a member on many forums, most of which I never visit since having a problem with something (TV, auto, tractor, truck, garden, AC, well pump, with a good search you can find forums on any/every thing), and searching for a forum. I have consulted forums on problems, hobbies, just about everything, and have registered in many of them. I have went to the tecguy forum often, when I had a computer problem (often easily solved and no problem) and before making purchases of new equiptment. One word of warning, ALL forums in my belief have some members that are socalled (in their opinion) experts, that are not correct in their advice to you, so use them, but with caution, although most answering persons are knowedgeble.

Malware can have many meanings, but here are the steps you can take to tackle this problem.

If you have any toolbars (Yahoo, Gmail, whatever), uninstall them (Control Panel->Add/Remove Software)
Run Spybot (previous poster mentioned url)
Reboot
Run Ad-aware (previous poster mentioned it)
Reboot

If you still have your problem, escalate your attack by running the same sequence above, but in Safe Mode. Reboot. After the PC posts, start tapping F8 and you will eventually get a screen to either launch normally or launch in safe mode. Do the latter and run spybot/adaware.

If this still does not fix your problem, you will want to use Trend Micro's HiJackThis. It's not a big deal, but you do have the possibility of really messing things up with this program, so I would find a forum that specifically deals with HiJackThis for this effort.

In really bad cases, I have actually simply done a repair on a client's pc, which will reinstall the os but leave client profile data (My Docs, etc..) alone.

i like spybot.  make sure you right click on it to open, and run as administrator.  if you don't it won't get some stuff.

also, disable 3rd party cookies.

Malwarebytes has been mentioned up above.  you can't go wrong with that one..it's probably the best for removing and identifying trojans.

i use a completely free anti-virus called Avast! it's been incredibly reliable for me for the last 6 years.
