Title: My Two Minute's Of Fame
Post by: JP on May 30, 2008, 03:50:10 pm
This past Wednesday night, May 28, 2008 at 10pm, Mike Hoss of WWL channel 4 news in New Orleans did a short segment about honeybees and yours truly, me, JP, made the news.

In the beginning of this segment you see me in my white jacket and veil popping up a plywood floor section to remove a colony of honeybees. These bees were in the reporter's house in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. They are doing well.

And in a few other segments you can see me in my main beeyard at my friend's 13 acres, his kids are shown at the end eating fresh honeycomb I pulled from one of my hives.

Anyway, here is the link to the story: http://www.wwltv.com/video/?z=y&nvid=249795

Anything that you can do to show the general public that honey bees are not the "killers" that Hollywood portrays!  Sounds like you had fun!

Wow!! JP you did a fabulous job and what a wonderful experience . You appeared so calm. You are getting famous now in your area and that is great.

Take care
Annette - Perhaps they will do a segment on "women" beekeepers one day. Here I am!!!

Excellent job JP! You came across as very calm and competent. You'll probably get even more calls now.  :)

I've gotten some calls from people who have seen the segment. One lady said she was so glad she watched the news cause she's had bees in her wall for three yrs now.

I had two calls today from a man and a lady that said they called the news station and got my number, way cool!

People are recognizing me from the segment, and one lady thanked me today for what I'm doing with the bees! Was crazy!

Oh, the power of recogntion, maybe the mayor will give me the key to the city! :-D :-D  Not! :-*

Cool JP!  You're a bee celebrity!  Great segment & very informative in a short period.  It's always interesting to me when watching TV from the lower 48 that they'll mention the United States & then show the 48 & not Alaska or Hawaii ~  :)  We're the step children states. Ha!

Anyway ~ Loved the segment & loved your sweet accent!  FG

Nice to see you working the bees in a t-shirt. That's good PR right there. :)

I thought it would be best to go without the veil for the camera, and the bees on that end are newer hives that are very gentle.

On the other end are colonies that have been established for a while and they can be a little testy at times. I did pull a frame of honey from one on that end and you can see my friend Ted's kid eating it at the end of the segment.

The camera guy loved to take these really long extended shots and when I pulled the honey frame I had forewarned him that we would want to be in and out of there, but he insisted I hold the frame, wait, a little longer he'd say, can you hold it there, etc...

Well after it seemed like an eternity, 3 minutes or so, the bees started becoming a little testy and my friend's youngest son was right beside me. I told him to go over to his Dad and I would bring the honey over, had to tell him over and over again.

Finally the bees had had enough and one followed us away from that end and the little booger got one right on the nose! The camera man said I had given him several warnings, but oh well, Dad was too busy talking with the reporter!

He was alright after a few shed tears and after he had the honey chunk in his mouth he forgot all about the sting.

BTW, I had no idea the kids would be there or I would have insisted they stay back or have protection, but the lure of a few minutes of fame, Dad couldn't resist! :-D

awesome job. Camera adds ten pounds, good thing you've been "eating healthier"  :-D

I wont(try) be photographed w/ veil for public dissemination myself. We tell people they are docile and then wear armour, not good if it can be avoided. doesn't always work, but i try not too. Again awesome job and great exposure for bees.

Glad you were able to see the clip Cindi, it is pretty neat, kinda weird, but I am proud of it. The reporter is one heck of a guy, I was very impressed with him, when I did the cut-out for him he was willing to assist, offered me water, food etc...

The camera does add about ten lbs, in fact when I met the reporter he appeared taller and thinner than on tv to me.

Cindi, I'm late to this thread, but if you're using Firefox and can't view the video you should use the IE Tab Extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419)  - it puts a Firefox icon at the bottom of your browser window, click it and it'll turn into an IE tab and the video will load no problem.  Lazy website programmers drive me crazy!

Oh, yea, JP, great video - they gave you lots of airtime!  Good job on representing beekeeping so well!

The video is great.  I like you working the bees without a veil.  It sends the right message.  I recently collected a swarm from some home owners and they were amazed to see me scooping up the bees and put them in the box.  Bees have gotten a bad rap and I think information like you provided here really helps people not be scared of them.

Great Job and Thanks

Yo JP!
 Speaking of that cutout :-\
It was a goose chase....I mean we went there(demolition site) and we decided to bring the entire 15 ft box home and tear it open and turn this into a salvage operation.
The people at the site were only seeing robber bees getting the honey. There was no life inside at all. The bees must have left after the box was dropped from 2 stories up.
I assume this hive had bee abandoned for some time as the hive smelled like good English mead. The honey was REAL dark but tasted ok to me :)
I told Paul we were probably taking a chance letting our bees clean this up, as there was an inch or more of dead bees on the bottom of the box, but it was pretty much too late when we got home......In 30 minutes there must have been 60,000 bees flying in with their spoons in hand!....I bet there was a hundred lbs of honey still in the comb.
Also, The comb was really dirty(coated in dirt dust) and almost black!
I figure at least a week till the box gets cleaned out and thats with me turning it every 2 days or so.
 I'll try to send a pic........I'll be right back!(http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/1254/beesitejv2.th.jpg) (http://img71.imageshack.us/my.php?image=beesitejv2.jpg)

Ok,....As you can see,(I hope), we did have to do a little work on getting the right wall down...Took us about 15 minutes...We told the ownner that we only extracted bees, we didnt patch up the holes afterwards....He seems a little upset :-D...But so were we,,,No bees!......I guess I better get a big shovel just in case eh'?

heres our end result....

Thanks Sharon, little John's theory is that we have such a diversified gene pool due to our many feral colonies. He thinks this may have a bearing on the CCD issue.

Yes, LA is CCD free.  So is Louisiana.  And, no I'm not being redundant.  LA properly defined is Lower Alabama. :)

I think that JP is onto something about the broad genetic gene pool.  I fellow keeper and I have been thinking the same thing about our area.  We have a large feral population as well.

John, nice pics, but if that took you an hour to get that together, we need to talk.  I think that you need a little bit of help with making your picture posting more easier for you.  Please PM me, and I will try to help you to get things rollin' a little faster.  That is too much time for you to spend on pictures, I know you would have other things that you would rather be doing, hee, hee.  And the pictures were too small, couldn't see them very well, sorry, not to be mean, but the truth must be told  ;) :) :) :)  Beautiful and most wonderful day in our greatest of lives on this earth.  Cindi

From Wiki:

The standard two letter abbreviation for the state of Louisiana is LA.

I am NORTH of the Mason-Dixon line doncha know?

How many LA's are there in the USA?  So far we have LA: Los Angeles, LA: Louisiana, LA: Lower Alabama, and LA: Lower Alaska (aka the panhandle).  Any more?

LA can also mean Lower Arkansas.  That's what we called that strange part of the state growing up.  Things were different down there.  I grew up right on the line between the hills and the Delta.  Man I miss that area.
