8 Frame Super Width
« on: February 23, 2013, 01:55:34 am »
I am intending to cut down some of my odd size boxes to 8 frame and be able to buy off-the-shelf equipment that fits in the future.  I know this subject has been pretty much done to death from a US standpoint, but I want to know if there is a standard width for 8 frame stuff in Australia.  I phoned Redpaths the other day and I was told that their 8 frame supers are 13 7/8" wide (just over 352mm) while one of the commercial beeks here makes his supers at 355mm wide.  I know that 3mm makes next to no difference at all, but it would be nice to be consistent.  What width is everyone else using in the way of 8 frame supers?

I just checked a couple I have and they are 353mm external dimension and 310mm internal dimension. Two of them are the alliance brand (made in New Zealand).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kevin,
I remeber seeing "Alliance" on a couple of the suppliers web pages.  I was encouraged to go and find the Alliance Beekeepers Woodware web page after I read your post and they have some good information like measurements etc.  They list Redpaths as one of their distributors too.  I just spoke to my commercial beekeeping friend and he spoke highly of the reliance equipment - good quality and good fit.  Judjing by what he said, a fair portion of beekeepers are using Alliance gear in Australia.

I just went ahead and cut 5 ideal boxes down to the same width as yours  ...so it's your fault if they are wrong  :-D  I Managed to neaten up some of my past dodgy woodwork and found where a few borers had been.  I've got the pieces soaking with some "detergent" in the wash trough at the moment to deter the borers a bit before I reassemble them.  A spot of polyurethane glue here and there should fill up any small gaps here and there left by the disassembly process.  I'll look at three of the 9 and 10 frame bottom boards I have next to see if they can be modified without hitting any nails, then think about building a few lids.

I have 9-frame boxes but in super I keep 8 frames.

7 frames will destroy combs for vain. Cell tubes are too long.
