National Honey Week 2005 13th - 19th February

Start the day the natural way this St. Valentine’s and invest in a pot of honey. The sticky stuff not only boosts languishing libidos with its natural energy giving properties but, as a delicious, healthy accompaniment to many breakfast choices, honey can provide that extra buzz needed on a cold February morning.

Fast Facts…

    *
The term ‘honeymoon’ derives from nature’s scrumptious sticky stuff – in ancient Persia, newly-weds celebrated the start of their married life by guzzling glasses of honey mixed with water everyday for a month to ensure a frisky future together.
    *
Honey has heart health benefits – studies suggest it improves the levels of antioxidants in the blood¹. To reap the benefits just add honey to a warm bowl of porridge, spread on a chunky slice of toast or blend in to a fruit smoothie, it couldn’t be simpler!
    *
The average honey bee will actually make only one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime – compare this to the average UK consumption of 25,000 tonnes a year and guess how many bees we need to sustain our honey cravings…
    *
With excellent antiseptic properties, honey provides a moist healing environment in which infection can rapidly clear, making it a good homeopathic dressing for use on burns and minor wounds².
    *
Adding a tablespoon of honey to meat before cooking helps block free radicals (which attack the body’s cells) and improves the taste and smell of the meat³.
    *
The honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.

I didn't know that honey applied to food could block free radicals.  Very interesting.

Being vegetarian myself, applying honey to meat blocks honey consumption!!
By the rude bridge that arched the flood
Their flag to Aprils breeze unfurled
Here once the embattled farmers stood
And fired the shot heard round the world
