Title: OXALIC ACID
Post by: COLVIN on January 04, 2006, 12:06:55 pm
OK I AM GOING TO DO THE OXALIC ACID TREATMENT. ONLY THING I CAN FIND IS WOOD BLEACH. DO I DILUTE IT OR USE IT STRAIGHT?  DO I ADD SUGAR? ALSO I HAVE A SMALL BROOD AREA WITH EGGS. DO I TAKE THIS OUT FOR TREAMENT OR TREAT WITH IT IN HIVE. MY HIVE  IS 2 FULL HIVE BODY SO DO I USE 50 ML OF MIXTURE?  TEMPS NOW ARE AVERAGE 50 FOR DAY TIME HIGHS. SUPPOSE TO BE COLDER THIS WEEK END.

THANKS,

COLVIN

Colvin,

Wood bleach is what you want. See this thread for info on diluting it properly:

Brood area contains mites. It it best to destroy them. If bees do not fly and you put frame out, birds will pick brood from frame. If you leave brood you may have hundreds of mites there.

Take queen away from frame and shake bees to the hive. Put empty box over the hive and then hit the frame inside empty box. So they not not splash on ground. A little bit smoke that they do not attach.

That is good. Get a vaccination syringe from drugstore so you see ecaxtly needed measure what to spray.

50F is good temperature. Just look that day is not badly windy.

You may put paper on bottom boad before handling. You will se how much you get mites when you take it away.

If you do this whole measure water and oxalic acid. Then take 1/3 from it  and ad sugar. I does not cost much if you cast the rest oxalic away. It is safer to measure big portion than a tiny.

Take 7,5 gr oxalic acetic powder and put it into 0,1 liter warm water.
Take 100 gr sugar and dilute it in the solution.

(Euro coin is just 7,5 g. You can weight your coin and you can use as weight. Own balance is easy to do. Our coin weights are in internet.)

This 1,6 dl volume is enough for 3-5 hives, depending of the amount of bees .

Drop 4 ml solution in one gap of frames, which is full of bees from edge to edge.

Do not give for one box hive more than 40 ml, and this only for hive which is totally full of bees.

Do not give for 2 box hive more than 50 ml.

Weather can be cold, so bees are in the winter ball. +5C (41 F) is good weather.

DON'T GIVE TWICE HANDLING. It is harmfull.

Finsky,

Oxalic acid is marketed as wood bleach here in US in hardware stores.
