Title: I pledge to be a Beekeeping Merit Badge Councilor
Post by: Robo on April 01, 2010, 11:46:20 am
I am starting this thread to have a single place for all those that would be willing to be a beekeeping merit badge councilor to identify themselves.  I know we have had a few other posts where people have volunteered, but I would like to have one thread that keeps it all together.  This will be a great thread for those in the BSA to get an idea of people willing to volunteer.  Please keep it to pledges only and make comments on the subject in other posts.

Please include if you have scout experience, your area (city/state), and beekeeping experience.   Please don't feel scouting or extensive beekeeping experience is required.   Willingness to mentor is far more important.

I am now a mentor for numerous new beekeepers, including 8 or 10 kids. I also plan to keep it up for as many as possible for as long as I am able.

I have been a boy scout and have worked with scout troops in the past. I would like very much to work with scouts toward a BSA merit badge.

I have kept bees for 30+ years and am a certified Journeyman beekeeper in the state of N.C.

I live in Randolph County, N.C.

I am proud to join many of my fellow beekeepers in offering my time  to act as a beekeeping mentor for scouts in our area.

I was an Assistant Scout Master after 6 years of scouting and am now President of the York Co Beekeepers, PA, and pledge the use of our resources to scouts in the area who are interested in this wonderful activity and life skill.

With 35 years of beekeeping experience and a former scout I would enjoy mentoring.  I am in Bradenton Florida but considering all the technology available today I believe much help could be provided through a Skype or a web cam and digital pictures.

**Just Received**  Please help.!

Please  e-mail BSA and let them know you are willing to be a mentor. Many of us signed the petition and wrote letters stating we would make ourselves available to teach boy scouts about the honey bees. Now is the time to contact BSA . They are requesting that we e-mail them at:    merit.badge@scouting.org put Honey Bees in the heading

Just write a few words letting them know you are willing to mentor. Give them a way to contact you and let them know the areas of  your state/county you are willing to mentor  in.

BSA had added Bee keeping to 8 merit badges now. One is required to earn Eagle Rank. 100,000 boys will be learning about bee keeping each year through BSA merit badges as of 2015 and some merit badges will be in effect as of 2012. They are going to need our help to teach all these boys.
Thank you.
Christopher

I helped our Bee Keeper maintain three hives when I was younger, but then we moved and had a desire but no time to keep bees. Well all that has changed so I started up last year... what a rocky start... bees came late.... three weeks...... Then after about a month to 5 weeks in the queen decided to swarm, Mid July. In Maine that is not a good time, so I started to be bee maid to my girls, watched them create new queen, prayed she would stay, and she did.... but they did not have a lot of time to create comb, honey and gather pollen. This proved to be a stressful time for them and me, my mentor said he would have given up on them and see what happened, but ultimately they would die off. I stuck it out and now they are thriving. During this entire time I have three Boy Scouts, I am the leader, ask to visit the hive with myself and their dad.... They did and were amazed.
So to the post I will be a Bee Keeping MBC, two hobbies I enjoy, Scouts and Bee Keeping... why not place them together to learn something. Insect study is the current Badge that has a section on Bee's but it does no justice to it at all, what othr insect does so much for the environment, flowers, or medical remedies?

I pledge to be a Beekeeping Merit Badge Councilor.  Scouting was a big part of my younger years. Growing up in a big city in the 60/70s Scouting kept me away from drugs and taught me morals and values I carry to this day.

I pledge to be a Beekeeping Merit Badge Councilor.
I am fairly new to beekeeping but am very active in my local club. Members of the club are very interested in the kids getting into the hobby. Tapping them to be councilors as well would present no problems.
