I am planning on switching to all mediums. I am looking for some ideas on how to make the transition. Part of the situation is that my frames are one peice pierco frame/foundation so I don't think that I can do any kind of cutout. Not sure how to handle the transition without sacrificing the brood in the deep frames.
Additionally I am hoping to split the hive this year and it seems as though I could combine splitting with the transfer to mediums.
I was kind of thinking that I could shake all of the bees into the new mediums. Then place the old deeps on top with a queen excluder to keep the queen from getting back into the deeps while the brood hatches out. In the meantime they would be building up the new meduim brood boxes below where the queen is confined. Then once the brood hatches out I could remove the deeps??
I was also thinking that I could do the split by shaking them into two sets of new medium brood boxes. Then putting one of my current deeps on top of each stack, distibuting the brood evenly between the deeps. But then I have one with a queen and the other without. I would let that hive raise a new queen or maybe introduce a purchased queen??
Need sugestions....
thanks so much,
Alfred
