Title: new nuc, queenless ?
Post by: bulldog on June 14, 2011, 12:29:13 pm
i attempted to start a nuc a few weeks ago. they made some nice queen cells. sunday i looked inside one cell had hatched the others were all torn open, but they were buzzing loudly as if they were queenless. does this mean their new queen is gone or not properly mated ?

Not necessarily.  Many things can cause buzzing.  Patience and waiting are called for now.  A new queen takes time to mate and also to fatten up and start laying.  If all has gone well it may be three weeks before you see eggs.

If you feel you must do something, give them one more frame with eggs from another hive.  If they are queenless they will build more queen cells.  Best not to disturb them for a while.

Patience young grasshopper.   Eggs will come in time.
