Title: Hello from Loveland Ohio, I have questions.
Post by: SignQueen on March 23, 2005, 11:01:36 am
Hi, my name is Cam
In February my husband came home excited about a beekeeper my father had intoduced him to. He wanted to go to the Southwestern Ohio Beekeepers School. At first I thought is he was crazy, but the more I thought about it the more I liked the idea. We went to the school and ordered a Nuc. Today I order our equipment, polystyrene, and in a few weeks I will be a beekeeper. (My father and his mother kept bees eons ago).
I am very worried about the lack of flowers and fields around here, I'm going to plant wildflowers on a few empty lots, but I have noticed since I moved back here where I grew up, there are very few honeybees anymore. When I was a child I literally had to watch the ground as I walked not to step on them. Now, I rarely even see one. My mother has quite a few flowers in her yard, and a few neighbors do. I have almost an acre of yard (we are building a house, slowly) so I can plant anything. I would love suggestions, I would also like to meet any other local beekeepers and join a group so feel free to contact me.

Hi and Welcome,

I'm sure the welcome committee will all be greeting you shortly

But if it puts your mind at ease,  I live in the mountains with no fields or farms within flight of my bees, and they do quite fine.   You would be amazed at the amount of wild flowers/weeds that the bees can find not to mention all the trees that flower.  As long as you keep you hive numbers small, you shoul not have any problems.  If you were planning on expanding to 100+ hives, then it would be a different story.

Good luck....

My name is Khris, I live in Deer Park, Ohio.   I just officially became a beekeeper this past weekend. April 10th.  I started here, it's a wonderful website with lots of friendly people, very helpful and resourceful.   One of the lady beekeepers lead me to South West Ohio Beekeepers assoc.  They just had a great hands on exhibit @ Parky's Farm Winton Woods.
Potluck picnic.  I have met lots of great & fun people there who just love to talk about bees non-stop.  Email or PM me sometime so we can talk.
