moving an overwintered nuc into a full box
« on: April 07, 2012, 12:12:00 pm »
I have a nuc that overwintered in a double-deep, 5-frame box. (5 on top, 5 on bottom). I will need to put them into a Lang soon. How do I arrange the frames? Two deeps with the same configuration with drawn frames on the outside, or all in one box with empty/drawn frames above? Thanks!

Never moved a 5 plus 5 nuc before.  I would keep all in order and move them into 2 deep boxes.   Put the empties on the outside.  Keep the brood together in order, left to right, top to bottom.

i think it depends what's in the frames, where the broodnest is located. If it is all in one area (top or bottom) you can spread all 10 in one deep. Brood in center and 5 other on each side (2+3). If the brood is over the 2 nuc bodies, leave them on top of each other in new hive as they were in nuc. Add empty frames on the outside of this.

Thanks! I went through it and the brood was all in the bottom, with stores in the top. I put them all into a single deep, with the brood in the middle. Brood and stores occupy seven frames. The other three are drawn comb.

Sounds like it worked out well.  Good Luck with them.
