Title: New SHB product - The Beetle Baffle
Post by: Moots on December 01, 2013, 10:09:06 pm
Someone from my LBC posted this to Facebook tonight...Anyone ever heard of
The Beetle Baffle LINK! (http://www.beetlebaffle.com)

Sure would be nice if controlling SHB would be this easy, my first impression is skepticism, but I'd love to be wrong.  :-D

Thoughts?

Just so I understand this product and please correct me if I am wrong but it keeps the beetle from climbing the walls.....

Do they not fly?

But heck I am green and have no idea what I am doing/talking about doing... I have not even seen a hive beetle.... Just thinking.

Variable,
Anyone who has looked at the link has seen as much as I know about this product. My first thoughts were exactly the same as yours.  Yes, to me it looks like it's works by stopping them from climbing up the interior walls of the hives. And YES! SHB do fly...So I was scratching my head on that one also.  :?

I "assumed" that maybe they don't fly once they get inside the hive since it's dark??? Maybe?

I'm hearing that the inventor may be at the Louisiana Beekeepers Association convention this weekend, so maybe I'll find out some more information.  If so, I'll pass it on.

OK...brief update....
Hit the vendor hall for a quick pass before the convention kicked off this morning and had a brief conversation with the folks at the Beetle Baffle table.

The concept is pretty straight forward.  The beetles either can't, or have extreme difficulty, crawling past the angled down section of aluminum.  As to the "can't they just fly" argument...The answer was simply, much like bees, they fly outside of the hive, but not inside, because of the restricted space....Which sounds plausible to me.
The concept being that the bees will quickly adapt and learn to chase all the SHB down to the bottom of the hive instead of up to the top where they usually corral them.

I guess my biggest reservation would be price point...$16.00 for four small strips of aluminum, strikes me as a little high...But maybe I'm just cheap, although I prefer frugal!

Maybe im missing something.... If you have a Mite trap with oil inside does that not accomplish the same thing. Keeping them from climbing back up?
