Thinking about ordering a Queen from Glenn's
« on: December 25, 2008, 07:17:21 pm »
I am thinking of ordering me a breeder queen or 2 from Glenn Apiaries, the one I am looking at is the USDA Mite Resistant VSH line, I see Bjorn has bought from them before, tell me how you like that line Bjorn or anyone if you bought that line? just going to add them to one of my yards to see how they do when crossed with my ferals survivors! might cross them with my PBA line also. Just looking for info on how this type bee crosses with others and how well they live up to the hipe!

TwT,
I've had good luck with the Glenn breeder queens over the years. I would always get the lesser cost (but same quality) unverified breeder queens. The only one that was a dud, was the Russian/Russian breeder.

If your going to order and spend that kind of money, make sure you can fully utilize the benefits. Use them for your drone stock, or use them for this years queen rearing, and maintain some records and control.

I think for most beekeepers, that are not trying to commercially maintain a certain line of bees, than getting a different queen stock every year, and then raising queens from your "best of the best" survivors, is the way to go.

if I remember right I use to see that the unproven queens was about $45 or so, I dont see them advertise that anymore, wonder if they still do it? looks like they dont.

well yaw have to remember that once you buy a breeder queen you will try to raise all you can from her as long as she last, either for improving stock and/or selling what you raised, say you buy the 4 queens package and graft 100 cells from each, at say $20 a new queen that's $2000 per queen you made, you would probably graft more than that from a queen if shes a breeder queen. it high but all in profit in the end for pure stock. I wouldn't buy a breeder unless I was going to raise a good number of queens from her, the reason I am doing it is to do that plus add new blood to my bee's that are suppose ably proven lines, I will use them in 1-2 yards to see what they do. I am looking at the $100 queens, not them $1000 dollar ones  ;)

Pshaw, Ted, you have problems with math?  The Latshaw queens are only $698 per queen plus s&h.  That's a bargain!

it ain't a problem with math, I was using it as a sample (expression), the only problem I have is paying that for queens I don't want to raise from or sale! the price is you pay for what you get and they have nothing I want, I started beekeeping with a few Italians from Hawaii and then started doing removals the same year, I noticed that most of the hives I removed had been there for years and nobody treated them, so I learned how to raise queens from fatbeeman  (Don) and redtractor1 ( Dwight) the second year and raised from them hives, since while doing removals I bought PBA queens and had good luck but they are at one of my yards mixed with some of my removal hives (very good queens for 3 years now), I have a test yard for new removal hive's to see how they do, I want to buy proven stock if I integrate with my own and will have a test yard for those also, I have about 5 extra out yards to use now and more to come, I just want bee's that don't need treatments on any size comb and survive.    thats the price I will pay, one day I will sell queens that I can back up without treatments, they might cost ;)

Many of the better queen providers started w/ Glenn Breeder queens to establish their genetic lines. I am right behind TWT in my own yards. PBA queens, VPQueens and ferals. All good queens, all w/ slightly diff superior qualities, all docile and all hygenic too. I hope to begin queen breeding in next year or so. I need a local mentor to assist as well.
