Title: My first cut out
Post by: ShaneJ on February 08, 2012, 07:04:29 pm: Back in January I got a call from a lady down the road saying she has a swarm of bees on the outside of her garage wall. I went down late that evening to drop them into a box but found they were already inside the wall.
I was given permission to remove the internal wall so I went back a few days later with some tools and got to work.

Being my first cut out I started panicking when I couldn't find the queen :-\ I could see the bees kept going higher and higher in the wall and I was worried they would go into the ceiling. Unfortunately we stopped recording at this point as we madly pulled down some more of the wall. Luckily we did end up finding the queen 8-)

Ed these are the calmest bees I have ever seen! They just didn't seem to care what I did with them. I'm looking forward to working with them in the future :)

Iddee, there are mozzies up there in the Territory where the flies can be thick too, that slip straight through mozzie netting. You have to put two layers up and some blighters still squeeze through.

Post by: ShaneJ on February 09, 2012, 11:11:44 pm: Iddee, The corks do help with the mozzies but some still get you. I used to do a bit of fishing in mozzie infested areas and the ol corks always helped a bit.

1. It's uncomfortably swelteringly hot
2. We like it hot and insulation reverses the oppressive heat too much
3. Our beesuit consists of singlet, shorts and thongs (which accounts for the 20 stings I got the other day)

Hawk the house is probably 15 years old, but that section i was working on was just the garage wall. However its not common here to use insulation in the walls.

Would you believe corks are hard to come by now? I have searched all over town and even the pubs say most wine bottles don't use corks anymore. How can I possibly construct a decent hat if I can't find corks?? Mind you, when I went into one pub they told me not to leave till I picked up my bottle caps and handed me 3 full bags of them. They know I'm a lagerphone maker.

I am not seeking corks for your typical akubra. The music group I attend is having a crazy hat competition. So far it involves a colander, buffalo horns, a wind vane, ducklings, sheep bells, a horn and a windup music box gadget. But without the corks it will be like a ship without a sail. :idunno:

You can get corks at home brew and craft shops. Any of these near by? Otherwise check ebay ;)

I learned from JP's videos that taking your time doing the job and having fun along the way makes it easier. Also I believe that people worry to much about getting a sting causing them to be on edge and possibly a little clumsy. You just need to relax because the bees don't want to hurt you.
I found I was having much more fun and was enjoying my bees more once I took the gloves and jacket off and I feel that I am more gentle with the bees without the gloves. I still use a veil though as I do have bad reactions if I get a sting.

Thanks, I found a homebrew shop and they have corks!

I need to put everything together and then ponder about more things to add, and then I can fire up the camera.

Duck, I guess the mozzies don't care for big lumps of cork hitting them up the proboscis.

Shane, how do you tie the cork?

I have always seen the string going through the cork with a knot on the bottom. So I would drill a small hole through to make poking the string in easier.

Whatever gave you that idea, D? That banjo windvane is made from a lemon squash can. Actually there was some serious music making going on that weekend. This is the example of what you can do with beer cans AKA go away to work and what they get up to when you are gone: the aussie windvane.
