   just wondering were every one gets there queens from.for a couple seasons i used Dewar queens at kalbar near Ipswich in qld good people to deal with nice queens.they have Italian queens contact num is [07-54635633].i did buy ten ligurian queens from kangaroo island last season.i only got one left the climate doesn't agree with them out her.this year i be raising my own queens.so were do you get your queens from.

Even newer question, how did you buy your queens? I'm especially interested in the KI Ligurians. I thought you should be able to buy them but wasn't sure, do you just ring up the apiary there or..?

I bought my first queen (Italian) this week from Ross Wood in Grafton http://www.rosswoodqueens.com/index.html
I must say he has been a real pleasure to deal with and very patient with a noob like me. The queen & attendants arrived yesterday and seem very calm and relaxed. I am off to our farm tonight and will place them in the hive tomorrow. I believe the hive has been queenless for the last couple of weeks, long story that I won't relate here but it's my only hive and Ross has come to my rescue  :-D I do have a nuc ready to go on the off chance my hive had a queen all along but I don't think that's the case.
 I'll let you know how she goes.

Noticed you use Carni x Italians.
What traits do they offer over pure Italians ?

The carnis typically handle colder conditions better and winter over better than the italians - the colony shrinks over winter to suit the conditions rather than consuming all of the stores that they have and keeping a large brood nest. They also recover quickly in spring when things start flowering. But they're not as productive as the italians... so the italian X carni cross - from my experience - leads to a better wintering bee with a rapid buildup in spring with plenty of stores to promote that rapid build up but they have the productivity of an italian
