When to Requeen, and switch to 2:1
« on: July 07, 2012, 04:48:48 pm »
I have a hive that has taken to stinging me through my beesuit and clothes. They don't go after me when I'm standing ten feet from the hive, but then again it is a new package this spring so it's not that strong yet. If it happens again tomorrow morning, I am thinking of requeening. Seems like this is a good time to do it. The heat killed everything so we are going into a dearth. I had planned to switch to 2:1 sugar water around July 15th, maybe just a bit later (I think the goldenrod, our big Fall flow, comes in around mid-Sept, but everything is early this year).

When do you all switch to 2:1 (if feeding)? And would that be a good time to requeen?

I feed 2 to 1 in the fall after the goldenrod.    A week hive may get robbed during a dry period if bees smell that feed.  And you can requeen anytime now.

Did you requeen and how are they doing now.  Good luck with your bees.
