Acebird's comments are worth noting. There are a variety of AC motor types available.  A shaded pole type AC motor requires a capacitor and is not easily made reversable, if at all. Some AC motor require a capacitor to run and others just require one to start.  Be careful before placing an order for one.  Plus torque rating is also worth considering. Some AC motor types have poor starting torque capability.

So I finally got my DC motor and controller, bought a treadmill off craigslist for $25.00 and stripped it. the only thing I have to do now is get a bushing for the pulley that was on the roller and attach it to the handcrank shaft.
