Title: what does a new queen look like
Post by: firetool on April 13, 2005, 11:43:01 am
Is she the same size as a muture queen is or is she smaller. I saw a bee that was larger than the others but it was not a drone ether. She just did not have as long of an abdomen as my other queens. The rest of her looked like a queen. Her torax had the large circle of no hair on it like other queens do. Any help please. It is the feral colliny that I cought that I by accident killed the queen. I may be hopeing to much though. The colliny is almost dead. So if she is not a queen, there is no hope for them.

thanks,

 Brian

A young queen doesn't "fatten up" until she starts laying and her diet is up'd.

A new queen is lighter colored and smaller than she will be after she is laying.  She is also more runny.  A laying queen usually just walztes across the combs like she has a sense of purpose.  The workers usually ignore you unless you actually practically touch them.  A virgin queen, if you get your finger even close, will run like she's looking for a place to hide, which she is.  The queen usually doesn't have any distinct stripes where the workers usually do.  The queen may have some "tiger" striping but they are not even parallel bands like the workers have.  The queen will still have a distinctly longer abdomen than the workers, but not as long or as fat as a lyaing queen.
