Title: Greeting from Doylestown Oh
Post by: Deerleg on December 29, 2011, 03:38:06 am
Hello to all.
My Grandfather was raised on a farm near Pulaski TN, and like many others in the south came up north in the 50's looking for work which he found as a tire builder in the big city of Akron. He still was a farmer at heart and bought a small house with a couple of acres of land just south of town where he raised all kinds of delightful fruits and vegetables.
He also was a bee keeper.
What wonderful memories come to mind of those days in the sixty's with my Grandfather walking into the back field, helping in the garden and keeping the bees. Recently his interest has been rekindled in me. Hope to spend the next couple of months exploring the possibility of starting a colony where I live in Wayne County. Looking forward to reading many of your posts and finding out about the secret world of bees... :)

Welcome, Deerleg.  Soapstone and carbon black.  Your grandfather worked during a period when quality mattered...rather than production numbers.  Kelly(GT) once had a motto of "Quality 1st or Scrap"...they made no blems...if something was wrong cosmetically with a tire they sliced it.  They scrapped that mentality years ago now...and both GT and Kelly have suffered.  Sounds like you have some fond memories of your grandfather.  Study it over, you'll have to decide whether you want the responsibility...a lot has changed in beekeeping since your grandfather's days in it.

Best wishes,
Ed

Thanks for the welcome.
One resource I'm using is from gobeekeeping.com.
It has a free online version of the following classes:
 Beekeeping 101,201,and 301.
Seems pretty uninformative and strait forward for this nubee....  :)
Any other suggestions as far as 101 study goes are welcome.
