Two New Colonies Removed From Fishing Camp 18' From The Ground
« on: October 07, 2010, 03:30:52 am »
I removed two colonies (Swarms really) from between floor joists of a raised fishing camp in Shell Beach, Louisiana.

The guy who hired me is a popular fishing guide in this area. We are trading the removals for a fishing trip.

JP, do you think birds or some other critters were making the holes for the bees to get in there to start with?  What kind of fish does the guide fish for?  Still an excellent job with the videos.

The bee vac is the Walter Kelly one.

These camps have all sorts of entrances for bees to get up past the plastic and start building but there did happen to be inactive bird nests adjacent to each hive.

Allen, sorry, never fully answered your question. The guide is mostly an inshore marsh fisherman for fish like trout, redfish, black drum...

So I am curious how do you decide to use the vac instead of cutting out the combs like you usually do?  I know in the really hot weather you don't use it because it is too dangerous, but did you use the vac this time because the bees were so high up?

Yes Annette, I used the vac because of the height issue and because there were two hives instead of one. I was told there was one hive and because of height and time restraints I elected to use the vac.

Also, the camp was being rented by the national guard and they wanted the bees gone now!

Couldn't leave a box to allow them to orient, I had to get it all done in one shot.

This camp is also approximately 45 minutes from my house.
